Loving Dubstep in America

In Michigan, pretty much everyone around here thinks that dubstep = Skrillex and shitty youtube remixes.

Tried introducing this one guy to dubstep - made him a mix of Skream, Distance, Mala, Burial - said it sounded like "ambient music" and that Mt. Eden was way better.

I don't introduce people to dubstep anymore.

Chicago stand up! Slow going, but we're building out here... out to Detroit as well, Deka, Calico, et al - those guys are pushing the sound.

Denver's got a proper scene. Sub.mission is the big promoter here and always puts on good nights and has been for what seems like forever now. i just got back from living in London and while it can't compare to living there obviously, they do a damn good job with bring in a diverse range of talent.

Hey, dsf. Maybe someone from Chicago can help me out with a question... what happened?

I live like 70 miles west of the city, and between 2007-09, went to a couple parties a month. Venues like Sonotheque, Lava (now defunct), Lura, Kinetic Playground, Sub T, etc., all had great events with excellent supporting locals and big name acts alike. Music varied from 2562 to Distance to Caspa, all kinds in between.

I know I'm out of the loop, big time, but it seems like the only dubstep-type events are at SmartBar, which still brings in high grade performances sometimes, and Congress and the Mid, which is for stuff like skrillex & rusko.

Apart from SmartBar, are there any spots pushing less tear-out type sounds these days? And when/why did the scene there peter out (or is it just for the obvious reasons that seem to be afflicting every city)?

I went to 1 show last year, to see Starkey up in Milwaukee. He was great, but it was like a rave. All E and candy kids and shit. Glowsticks. Is that going on in Chicago?

Edit: I did just check the events forum, and its cool that Matty G & 6Blocc are playing at Sub T (with mc Anti!), but I've seen them both a couple times each, so not enough draw to make me trek out to the city. Reso is playing, and he's had some great releases, but I've seen him too. The rest of the events were acts that I've never heard of (not really their fault), or stuff like zed's dead & kill the noise (shit I can't get into). So I guess there's still an odd "real" event (I do realize how dumb that sounds, just don't feel like articulating any further) going on at times, but is it all ravey and filled with highschool girls?

If anyone could please answer any of my questions, it'd be greatly appreciated. Otherwise, apologies for a possible thread derailment (not like the topic hasn't been discussed ad nauseum though). Thanks!

i live in michigan also, and when ever people use the term dubstep they are referring to brostep or skrillex.

How do you mean exactly? You do realise there's many other styles and offshoots from the traditional dubstep other than the midrange stuff. Why does listening to them mean that the original dubstep listeners are getting left behind?

From what i've gathered a lot of people that liked the original don't like anything but the original,but I could be wrong. It feels like I'm going trough the motions I did when I first started listening to DnB.. The purists and elitists seem to look down upon anything but what they think is good. I'm not saying all the people that liked the original dubstep are elitists but It just seems a lot of people i meet are, I guess I have bad luck.

You do realize theres a house subforum on this site, why do you think its there? For shits and giggles? Very few purists and elitists here, most of the ppl here actually like the evolution of their sound and are always eager for new directions, just dont expect them to hop on board for some 15 minute gimmick.

i mean, if you look in the tunes for feedback section of the forum, or even all the WIP topics, there is hardly a producer posting a tune that is of "purist nature"

Seriously? I'm definitely driving down there this weekend if theres anything on. I've lived in ohio for over 9 months and have yet to visit cincinnati. I just figured detroit was the closest city that had anything worth traveling for.
