Sometimes it's nice to just do it really roughly as you go (it's easier to get a feel for the tune if the mix is vaguely correct) then scrap it all once the actual composition/arrangement is done and mix from the beginning again. That's largely down to whether you will do stupid shit in the first attempt at mixing though. And definitely fucking save the project first if you're trying this, obvious, but needed to be said.

I mixdown as I go to an extent, but only because FL has a weird habit of making the audio clips that I import directly into the playlist that much louder than if I'd loaded them into a sampler/Slicex channel.

So I'll hot assign those to spare mixer channels (usually 32/34 onwards depending on what is already setup) and volume control them as required.

Actual proper mixdown where I'm fiddling with EQs and whatnot to make everything sit properly is done once the majority of the tune is out the way.

Personally i think its good practice to at least get things sitting quite nicely as you go along as you could end up addding too many layers and leaving yourself the gargantuan task of making everything fit at the end

this..
i write a tune, arrange it, track it, then mix it. Saves me from tedious edits, and mainly because I reduce my buffer size to the minimum to record MIDI (to avoid latency)
and raise it to a hiher setting when mixing (to preserve CPU resources for plugins and automation)

Submixes, whilst i'm producing, then vague mixes, then a proper mix the day after!

Ive got into the habit now where I mix as I go along so naturally that by the time the composition is done its just a matter of simple filtering and compression tweaks to finish the mix.

yeah, i mix as i go too. however, i think it causes me some problems - personally.

i get so wrapped up in mixing an 8 bar loop, that i lose the vibe of the track. and by the time i'm ready to phase out of mixing that loop, and phase into the creative stage again.. i'm always at a loss of where to take it.

my advice. don't focus TOO much about mixing as you go. yeah, mix a bit to make sure everything sounds good together... but don't worry about getting perfect levels and eq until the creative stage is nearly complete.

I mix as I go, then mix everything down again when I'm done, which is really maybe a few tweaks here n there after listening to it a couple times. I just make sure I have a proper gain structure & always make shit fit well as I go, then when I'm done I don't have any tedious mixing to do. :corndance:

Yeah I get that too. Ultimately some people need to separate their creative and technical sides, some people can manage both at the same time.

I mix as a I go, I want everything sounding nice as i'm building it. The idea is that at the end, all that's needed is a bit of nip and tuck

I mix roughly as I go, as I want it to be "listenable" while building the track, then final mix it when done.
