Headphones or Monitors & Which? (Diagram of room included)

Post by Pulp » Sat Jan 21, 2012 10:59 pm

Hi all, first of all I thought I'd draw up a crappy diagram of my room to make it easier to understand my needs!

Image

I currently am making tunes using Mission MX1s, they're okay, but they're Hi-fi speakers and don't really have the low end/colourlessness I need so I was looking for monitors. Also what isn't good for me is that MX1s aren't magnetically shielded, so I've had to shove them right up near the ceiling, which isn't so bad for the left speaker, but the right speaker is near the ceiling and in the corner, with new speakers I could move them down the wall/on my desk, but I would still have the corner issue. So then the question arises, is it worth me getting monitors in a room that isn't ideal, or getting some good headphones? I guess some room treatment would be worthwhile...

If I can get away with spending under £200 that'd be great, but could stretch a bit if it's really worth it. Will mean less vinyl buying. :p

I look forward to your replies.

Cheers.

speakers don't like to have walls running along the side of them, thats for sure. can you fit your desk in front of your windows there? if not maybe you could move your bed against the wall where your desk is in order to make the change?

also the least your going to want to spend on a pair of monitors is 300-400, otherwise your just going to be buying them again soon. monitors are better that headphones but having both is nice too for late night sessions.

both. nice to have something you can A-B with
such as a mx could sound great on the monitors but when you listen thru headphones the levels might all be wrong

Id go with headphones, then get the room treated, then monitors.
...in my opinion

I think I'm feeling this option, as I won't be able to crank up the volume as often as I'd like with monitors. I was looking at the Beyerdynamic DT990 PRO and then in the future some KRKs, but wouldn't be sure what size monitors to get for my room.

probably 6" there a good happy medium. the 5s just don't have enough bass and the 8s will be way too much for that room.

The Yamaha HS50M has a nice low end and it's a 5", it's just a matter of getting used to it. It also has this room control switch, adapting it to rooms where the speakers are near corner and such. It hits heavy on the mid - hi range but I like that, it exposes a lot of sharp and problematic frequencies. A cheap way to treat your room is to hang stuff on the wall. Posters, carpets, blankets on the corners between the wall and the ceiling. Even a couch or a bed can be consider as treatment. Your biggest trouble treament wise is that huge ass window but you can train your ears according to your room. Check how good tunes sound inside it, et coetera.

Thanks for the replies again! Anymore input would be brilliant.

Another thing I wanted to add is that I run my speakers through a Marantz PM25 Amplifier, would it be best just to skip the amp and get active monitors or?

I'd say go with actives, but I don't have any real experiences with passives.

Well if I did get active it would mean I could get rid of my amp, so then I'd have space to keep the monitors away from the corner.
