New to Dubstep

Hiya IM somewhat new to the dubstep scene, Im actually thinking about getting into making some just out of hobby, I used to toy around with hardcore techno and hard trance type stuff. Ill be honest...I only like about 10% of the dubstep out there, but too each is own. I seem to favor the more grimy and heavier stuff. In particular I have been listening to Excision and Liquid Stranger as well as Datsic, thats some pretty awesome stuff. A metalhead at my roots I guess I tend to favor the heaviest when it comes to anything metal>death metal (nile, suffocation etc etc), techno >hardcore techno, hardtrance, gabber hardstyle, then there is dubstep. Im not super big into the poppy sounding stuff such as Skrillex or Bassnectar certainly not bad but I prefer something more aggressive sounding.

I realllly like Liquid Stranger I feel he has a lot of talent and is extremely original when it comes to his beats, the same could be said about Excision.

Im going to a show in Knoxville, TN Mar 16 and it's excision with liquid stranger and some guy called lucky date. Not really sure what to expect? What to wear? Should I bring a date? etc etc

I thought about going to this Mimosa show too but I think its a little soft for me.

Any suggested artists that are similar or have the same concept as Excision or Liquid? Lemme know thanks

I wouldnt take a date, id take friends. never been to a brostep show but from what i hear shit gets freaky, as they say. only dubstep shows ive been to (original dubstep) have been sausage fests, but thats cool too i guess

Id go to the Mimosa show just because why not. still bring friends not date.

Generally just dont take dates to shows.

Similar artists: Downlink (lightyears ahead the rest of Rotten Records IMO), and maybe some dungeon stuff because its kind of relatable i guess, but more minimal and accepted by us DSFers: J Kenzo, Distance, Kryptic Minds, TMSV etc

I saw excision w/ downlink once. it was aight. the sound system was banging, but the crowd was too down to mosh, which i did not dig.

Because what you're listening to isn't real dubstep. It's what people who like true dubstep like to call "brostep," because it sounds like someone screaming in four face/farting and bitcrushing it. And it attracts the frat boy crowd, i.e. "bros," who come out with glowsticks and new era caps and no shirt to the concerts to listen to "dem filthy wubz."

If you want to know what real dubstep is, head on over to the "New To Dubstep? A good place to start is here" thread, as well as the wikipedia page on dubstep. If you don't care, or you do listen to it and don't like what it sounds like, fine, but just know that
1) The music you like isn't really dubstep
2) This forum probably isn't the best place for you

If you're from a metal background, I don't know how much you'd like real dubstep, which we listen to. It's a much darker, deeper, and more minimal sound than brostep (which is what Excision, Downlink, Liquid Stranger, Skrillex etc make).

However, one of the gods of true dubstep, called Distance, comes from a metal background, so you may well like it. He says he likes dubstep because it has the dark, almost scary feel of metal.

ahah pretty much what Sonika said, but hey listen, I know where you are coming from. If you check out the Beginner's Guide to Dubstep thread, it'll begin your pathway to serious tunes. I used to listen to Datsik like mad, now I can't, listening to him now is like listening to a 1st grade marching band

Rather then trying to find artists which can be tedious, try labels. DMZ, Hyperdub, Tempa, Tectonic, Swamp 81, Kapsize, Planet Mu, Punch Drunk, are all classic labels that never fail to impress.

If you're looking for a metal side to these tunes....no. most people who attempt fail. unless you like borgore. he was a metal drummer, now he's a twat.
