Probably made about £150, and spent well over £800 on production equipment in the process.

^ that's how it usually breaks for most artists if you think about it,,, djing is just as bad when you think about how much $ comes in versus how much goes out for records, equipment etc

But Percept, you're fairly new to the game, I'm sure in time you will begin to make more and more, especially because your tunes are fucking HUGE! (Finger's crossed for Boxed In) Really though? Just 150? On that Corrupt tune? That compilation was in the top 5 on juno for quite some time, I'm surprised you didn't make more.PERCEPT wrote:Probably made about £150, and spent well over £800 on production equipment in the process.
I've always wondered how artist get paid on juno. Or how the downloading tunes / payment to the producer works. Is it like, for every download you get a portion of the buyers payment, or like, for every 100 tunes sold you get x amount of dollars?
Re: As a signed artist have made anything back?
depends on the contract, the distrubutor and the label really. sometimes a label takes a percentage, in my case they dont, luckily- still waiting for my cheque though...
i run a label,http://soundcloud.com/thebohemianclub,

Just got my first million. So sick.
Re: As a signed artist have made anything back?
put out 3 records and have got about $150. i was made to feel bad for taking that money, too.
and was later told it was a mistake to press my tunes.

hahaha, ur sarcastic but when u put in time, no pretty all ur free time u have into a project, its nice to be rewarded, im not expecting much or anything really, just would be nice to be able to treat myself to some new production kit-that'll be good and to do that u need money unfortunately...

If money is a matter, I'd suggest, stop making music now.
Discussing this is as unprofessional as discussing fees.

what this man said. It is good to be rewarded and all that but a whole discussion on how much you get paid is just not right
Re: As a signed artist have made anything back?
nothing, but was blessed for it to happen and i have a vinyl with my name on to boot. time for a alias change maybe...
ingenuity and talent cannot be learnt and so you will see a new wealth divide because of it. and its not like lawyers or accountants (where you are expressly taught), where they are protected in a guild and have minimal fees, you will see a rise in cases like where the bottom %5 make nothing, top %2 make it big and the rest get by. (this doesnt just apply to music btw but includes it).
why cant we talk about fees and the like? why all smoke and mirrors? i know were 'artists' but brothers gotta eat. complete transparency i say. call me vulgar what evs
in this day and age, the creative types are more and more valued, the industrial revolution is dead.compa wrote:If money is a matter, I'd suggest, stop making music now. agreed

What sort of living do well-known underground artists from the UK make? As in the type that a revered on here but the normal bloke in the street will never have heard of.
Could you make a comfortable living off of record sales alone? I get the impression that 90% of earning come off the back of events/festival bookings, but what about the more withdrawn artists that don't tour? Do they have normal jobs to supplement their music salary?
