I'm looking to make an early-era dubstep bass. Best example I can think of would be Benga's "Amber" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldVmVBxv4bI) The thing alternates between being subby and sounding like... well... wet farts, and I assume this effect is controlled by a resonator but I might be way off.

Any help with this one would greatly appreciated and if any especially generous individuals want to get real specific, I'm working in Reason.
Yes, the resonance of the filter is enveloped with a long attack. Meanwhile the cutoff is wobbling, sure you know how to do that. The waveform is just a saw I think. I made something just like this in Sylenth once.
I see. Thanks for the tip. I get the individual pieces of what you're saying, but I'm having a bit of trouble translating it into a working synth.

Any chance you could show me a screencap of your Sylenth? Might help me figure it out a bit easier.

Post by sentokan » Thu Jan 19, 2012 7:53 am

Hello everyone! :)
I am trying for some time to make a dubstep bass on the Nord lead synth with no succes.. I see this guy how he used the MS 2000 to make duby basses and sounds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMxV5T_TRYw
Isn't posible to make same sounds with the Nord Lead or am I doing something wrong. :u:
Thanks a lot!

How do you aquire this midrange "growl" xKore is using in his tunes? It's very similar to the ones Zomboy is using.

1:09-1:10 (youtube is a bitch so try checking arount that mark) in this song, its pitching down

0:46 at the dropp, its pitching slightly up then down

4:30

Sounds like they both got the exact same sounds, I've seen many people getting close in fm8 but not close enough to be honest.

Aphex Twin Snare?

Post by Dosva » Fri Jan 20, 2012 4:46 am

So I've always really loved the snare-repeat or whatever one would call it, anyone have any tips on creating a snare pattern like that, not sure exactly how to go about it.

The first time it appears starts at about 4 seconds.

Snare rush.
Just sequence the hits really close together like glitching or the so called stutter edit. Turn off grid snap and quantize, just play with velocity and a filter cutoff. You can also do it via grid snap but with a bit less control. Pretty simple to make the sound but harder to make it sound really good.

@Dosva The pattern seems to me using the same techinque as the boucing ball technique.

I'm not sure it is the way he does it but imho it could be a lead to find out :)

I don't have the nord lead, so how would I know what you're doing wrong or what sounds it can make?

Look up tutorials for the "hoover' synth because that's all it is. Also it sounds like it's got a good deal of chorus or unison (but not too much, because it cuts through the mix really well).

p0gman, megalodon, 50 carrot, supreme, antikz synth in massive.
Anyone know how to do this, I've been trying all night and I can get it kind of close but it doesnt have that metalic feel to it, mine sounds generic

Synth I'm wanting:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7qSAAapbGA at the drop on the half time, the bubbley (dutty) synth
or

Hey to make some dutty synths in massive that sound like that. You would just take
OSC1 -12 Make it Frozen or find another one that works.
mod osc1 -12 turn on phase and ring to osc1
Route to Filter1 using bandpass
lfo both cutoff and bandwith to get a sick lfo
lfo the eq highs + frequency + boost
lfo the pitch -0.33 on osc and mod osc

use sine shaper and find the right setting.

put on chorus or reverb and dimension expander

now ur making dutty shit thats really hard to clean up.

I have been fascinated with this Trolley Snatcha sound forever.. Any ideas?? Starts at 0:27. Reminds me of a G-Funk synth wobbled

How do you make that synth sound kicking in first at 0.46?

Pretty much the same sound in this at 0.37

Obviously some pitch automation but other than that im clueless. Thanks!

@rezto-dubz: You already have it -- pitch automation, likely with multiple voices. Kind of like an organ, in that regard, so you could just find an organ vst and have at it. Or synthesize it... So get two oscillators (I like saws but sines can work -- experiment!) and add a fifth (e.g. D3, D4, and A4). Bounce/render it to a new instrument, and apply a sine LFO to the pitch. Run through distortion and that's it. Alternatively, distortion first, and then render. Either way, harmonics are key. Harmonics make that thickness. Quick example:
