Dubstep on an average system...
Dubstep on an average system...
Just got back from 100% dynamite @ electrowerkz... (the soul jazz night)
couple of dubstep tunes got dropped, and, to be honest, on that system they sounded kinda weak.. this has happened before where i've been proper hyped to hear some dubstep and then when it gets played it sounds a bit underwhelming (i'm thinking of plastician's set at dirty canvas a couple of months ago..
i'm not sure what my point is really... maybe that it's sometimes annoying that such amazing music is so dependent upon the system it's played upon. will try and be more eloquent in the morning.
anyway, thank fuck for the systems at FWD, DMZ, Platform 1 etc...

One thing is that where tunes only have a SUB line and no real bass in the octave above then pretty much the whole of the bass can go missing if the system isn't delivering. Also if there isn't much else in going on in the tune (which can be a nice thing of course) then there's hardly anything left to hear!

I was supposed to play this little rave last night and when I got there and saw they only had two small tops and no sub, I put my records back in my car. Fuck that. I would say that is a below average system tho.
I played a little show in this room that fit about 50 people and they were only running one 15" sub, two tops and a monitor and it was rinsin'. You don't need the valve system to get down to some dubstep.

there a certain records i don't even bother playing at home because my set up isn't good enough to do them any justice. same should go for less than meaty systems in clubs really. frustrating hearing something that you know there's more to than what you can hear.

first dubstep night i went to the system was piss poor think my gran's telly was louder. There wis only about 10 ppl there all huddled round the system. We ended up standin next to spaceape & kode9. Was still a memorable nite
Personally think thats the mark of a properly good tune is if it can be played on a shit system an still sound good. Altho obvious there are exceptions an i'd prefer to be pummelled with bass weight

I can't hear the bass in 50,000 watts even in my car...
and Blood On My Hands is too hot to handle.. just goes BZZZZZZ
Bad thing is I want to do a Reggae into Dubstep set for our after exams party, but it's just at a pub and I think the system is subless.. maybe there's no point? or I do you reckon I could just get away with doing the busier tracks which don't rely on bass weight as much...

interior of clubs is where all the money goes here in Sarajevo..kLOski wrote:i enjoy the subbass even on my ipod.... ut i do understand what you meani hate clubs putting more money in interiour tha in the soundsystem....
so when you play a dubstep set on a shitty soundsystem, people don't get really hooked up, because it's not the real deal.
it would be cool to see somethin like what Dillinja and Lemon D did when they created the valve sound system. it took them a year to build that system. you can see a short documentary about it here http://youtube.com/watch?v=62jjsbhNdGs
sorry if its already been posted
must cost some serious money to put something like that together

Played at a really trendy club in the back room (the main room was hardcore/hardhouse) and the system for us was 2 tops on the opposite side of the room with no monitors, a shitty shitty shitty mixer and the volume kept changing when you changed which channel in the phones you were listening to. Needless to say me and Rudetone were buzzing with excitement to get out of there with the couple of bottles of really cheap fizzy wine. Oh and when we went in they had sniffer dogs so we had to run back outside and stash our cess up a drain pipe..........LONGabZ wrote:I was supposed to play this little rave last night and when I got there and saw they only had two small tops and no sub, I put my records back in my car. Kode9's set in Manchester back at the start of May there was let down slightly by an average system. Still a totally skankin set, but it definitely could've been a lot better.
