eye-sic: I like the laid-back you are trying to get… But first of all: Get your mixing right… Check the moneyshot thread! You lose your flow, because the drums don't have enough space!
Also… Emphasize your drop a little more! But yeah, I like the idea for the track… It's a little bit 'filthy', but not in a bad way, I think!

Kikaruu: Your drum work is pretty nice… It's mixed pretty well! But get some more variation in it, son! Take another drumloop or something or you could do something more about your snare… A extra hit, some more delay or reverb at certain hits… Just give it a more complex groove!
Not really liking your synth… But that's more a style discussion! But it's a little bit to hard, I think! Put it some dB's down, to give the drums some air!

Retaliate: Get some more variation in those drums man! Your kick snare pattern is getting a little boring if you loop it like this! Hmm, yes… not really mi kind of track! Yeah, I don't think your synth is good enough! But that's not really a problem! Everyone had a stage like this, give it some more years… (2 years or so) And I think you will make some beast of a tune!

And hallelujah, here's mine! It's a jungle/dubstep/house orientated track... Give me some advice!

@CrewCutz
When the beat and the music comes in, you should try to make the mix wider. It sounds like everything is panned down or pretty close to the center. Try panning the hi-hat maybe 50% right. And maybe put a Haas-effect VST on the bass sound, to make it wider. Once the mix opens up, it should sound a lot better.

Here's mine: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/47367411/Shots%20Fired.wav
The working title is "Shots Fired", and the concept is supposed to be about a war. So the air raid siren, then the battle starts (the loud part). Afterwards, the battle ends (the silence), and then sort of an image of looking over the battlefield with all of the dead bodies (the quiet part). Any suggestions to help support this theme would be very helpful!

EDIT: If for some reason the Dropbox player won't play, right-click on the page and click "Save As...", and then play the file.

@societyloser1 I like the intro pad got that nice old school feel, drums work well except the kick seems a bit off sometimes I was thinking this could go the future garage route! I'd probably add a vocal in the intro with a nice reverb and a delay. some percussion throughout with some reverb whacked on aswell just to make it feel wider and give it some variation. I do like what you got so far though looking forward to hearing what it morphs into!

@Crewcutz I'm pretty anti-wobble so wont be much help here haha! but I can see what you are going for. I'd whack some reverb on the snare first and maybe cut the hats after the snare hits just to give it a pause and a bit of a swing (If that makes sense) not too keen on the mid bass maybe if you slowed down the arrangement a bit and whacked a nice reverb on.

@Take2 lol man this had me cracking up though I do hate grange hill and I hate brostep  funny stuff man.

Put a little more time into this I managed to blow my sub to some extent yesterday while working on low end so I'm not quite sure if the sub is hitting enough.Second one is one I been working on earlier not too sure but any feedback is appreciated!

@InTheCrowd: I really dig the weird vocal clips that come in and out reminds me of the dj setting on those casio keyboards.
@CrewCutz: Why did you pitch Ken Forees voice up :(. It makes him sound like saddam hussein in south park. Other then that it's dope just not my cup of tea.
@societyloser1: Top notch it sounds very professional your drums sound amazing.
This is all unmixed and recorded in mono out of my mpc so they are very quiet. sorry

@ terryfunk4life: zip song 15, I like this intro, its making me nod my head, I like a the simple sounds, staplers it sounds liek a key board. Also I'm into the funky time signatures, or at least the appearance of one, I'm not counting. The counter point is pretty sweet. I like whats going on around 1:45. The beats makes this work for sure though. I think it might be cool with some vocals. Like rapping or singing. I'm excited to see what this looks like with bass. I think the progression is fine, and it doesn't get repetitive to me.

zip song 4. More tempo, not liking the drums on this one so far. No punching through, sounds too quanitied. Maybe some sort of hat. It's a little strange, like old samples and lofi stuff. I dont like it nearly as much as teh one before.

zip song 8: That snare needs more of a tail imo. There;s a lack of naturalness ti the way everythings chopped. Idk if thats what you're going for. But in this case I don;t like it so much how everythings getting cut off.

Overall I really like how nothing is too repetitive. There's a lot of variation which is great. Bass might change these songs a lot, but i can't know. I dig the hip hop influence. I think even everything is lofi, the songs would benefit from a richer quality to the sounds.

I didn't even read that these were from an MPC, but I was about to mention the MPC forums, haha but you probably know about them already.

@ InTheCrowd: 1. I like the different stlye drums and the random vocal effects and weird noises with the minimal piano, although I think the piano could be less sharp and more warm if possible. Sub mich be a little loud, im not sure, I have trouble telling about sub on my headphones. The quick drums contrasting with the slow piano is nice. I think it might be cool if you had some sort of low passed bassline to sit on top of the sub so it would be more defined note wise and could be heard through things without real low end response. It's enjoyable, I didn;t get bored. Good job.
2. I like the bizarre drums once again with the weird samples. I like melody in my music, so I think it would sound better with that, but idk if that's your thing. I'm really impressed with your percussion though overall, real creative, reminds me a little of photek, at lesat the weird voice noises as percussion.

@ CrewCutz:
The pitched vocals are funny. It sounds really cheesy and goofy. Idk if thats what your going for based on the words. lol at the random zombie mouth. I like the bass actually, its real thick and warm, drums are punchy as well. I'm impressed after reading your comment about not knowing about equalizer haha. It's sounds mixed pretty good. I cant tell if theres a sin sub in there. It would sound better with on in along with the bassline. Although that would introduce problems with your subby kick. It's a bit repetitive. I think you could mix it up either by switching up the notes, or even in this case you could just alter your bassline to a slightly different patch every verse. I think that would work well in this situation. Like throw in a i octave up version.

@ societyloser1: I like those warm electric organy sounds you got. I feel like I've used sounds that sound very similar. Nice drum beat for sure. Like the hats a lot, and Like the the snare ghosts notes and switch up variations a lot. nice and punchy. I like how the organs switch from sustain to stabby, makes for a nice break. I think you also should put a lowpassed bassline on top of the sub to give it more warmth and to let it be heard on speakers without sub response, otherwise its just limited to people with access to low end stuff all the time. I think you should pull the drums out at some point again and just let it be melodic. The drums aren't as exciting 2 minutes later. Did you chop a break or something else? Good job. Groovy.

Here's something new, different than my usual. It's slow paced, just close your eyes or something. This isn't for the club haha. Let me know what you think.

@briskisgoodforu Very different. Difference is good though, it shows creativity :D It has a kinda futuristic feel to it, for some reason I get Final Fantasy in my head when listening to it. Don't even ask me for feedback on this, I wouldn't even know what to compare it to :p Although it's not entirely my cup of tea I found it nice to listen to.

@InTheCrow I love the first one. Very Jazz and minimal. There is nothing to say about it. It's an amazing track. The second one was nice, but empty, which I know is what you was going for, but it's just not my style. That first one is bang on though.

@CrewCutz Work on those drums. They sound a bit flat. For the type of Dubstep you're going for I'd make them fat, and tight. Over compress the little fuckers :p

@societyloser1 I didn't even read the line you put above the track and I was just about to mention House and Jungle! Nice arrangement, no too minimal, yet not to cluttered. I can't give you any advice as I like it how it is. Sorry :(

Something different from me. Was fleshing out the beginnings of a UK Bassline/4x4 track today.

@GV1 i love it until that filthier bass drops, not that its bad, but moreso it somehow doesnt fit with the song

@briskisgoodforu great song! i just dont like the song structure and progression, its sorta lacking

@terryfunk4life hmm it sounds a chiptune/cell phone song lol i guess it really needs the bass

@IntheCrowd holy massive tune! if you made it a tad darker sounding/added some pad it would song incredible

We just whipped this together in a few hours, just want some feedback (yes the reverb on the snare is terrible im aware lol)

@Inthecrowd The sub hits fine through my headphones. I love your style. That kind of pionoy sound haha works so good.

@CrewCutz HAHA I really like that intro. Sounds awesome. I loved the arrangement. I couldnt hear anything wrong with the song.

@Eye-siC I love drumstep and you do it very well. There is a very dark vibe. It sounds like your drums are making your sounds cut out or lose volume. I have no advice as to how to make that better but you might know. Sick song. And you probably wont like my remix of a metal song haha.

So here it is. I listened to the original on youtube and liked the drums so i made them and put my own sounds to it. It might be rough but i am still very new to this. The intro might be too long.

@crewcuts: deep bass, nice mood & pretty dark vibe. i like it! :)
@societyloser1: well mixed drums. tho the stabs&bass could come a bit more into the front.
@inthecrowd: yea, sounds good to me as well. nice percussions!
@gaol: yea, the intro is horribly long :) afterwards i can feel some flow but the overall sound is quite muddy and it's missing a lot of brilliance/presence. go on tho!

here's my latest one.. can you give me some advice on the basssound in the drop? the whole track is completely unmastered, there's just a limiter on the master to get the volume up for you to actually hear it. i guess any distortion may appear because of that sloppy "make-it-louder".. especially the low freq is kinda :6:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5411394/growla03.mp3

i hope this player works for you as i'm not yet willing to publish it on my soundcloud :) it's just a snippet ofc (so the intro will be pretty long.. or at least seems to be - drop starts at around 01:05)

thanks in advance!

@gaol, I like it, but the intro felt too long.

@bl0rg, Awesome job! Really well done, the drums are mixed decently, but the snare is a bit distorted.

@InTheCrowd, I like the chilled out vibe and the glitchy samples used.

My track isn't technically dubstep, it's complextro/electro, but I'll share it anyways,

@leben not hearing any audio i think something's a bit wrong with your link :(

@gaol as stated above it sounds pretty muddy. try messing around with the EQ a bit on the bass and just try to separate things more frequency wise. also you might want to check out this guy "iamerror" he does some pretty cool electronic-metal type stuff.

@bl0rg guitar is sounding a little too clean, and as you said the snare sounds generic and kind of hollow. dig this track though, heard it at work on the radio and thought a dubstep mix would be interesting. keep going :)

my track is in my sig, slowly but surely getting towards a final product. let me know what you guys think!

check out waves paz analyzer plugin and read up on what frequencies certain things should be hitting at. mess around with your levels and eq things until they start to sing on their own. solo a sound then play the song and then solo it again while messing with the eq until it sounds distinct or blends in with what you want.

Opinions?

I need them!

Oh, and play it loud (to make up for the applied loudness mastering would give).

Okay thanks for the update on that.

I'll give my version of constructive criticism on your track!

The drums are good and your swing/rhythm is very relaxing/attractive to my ears.

From my own experience I can see where it seems you are having difficulty maintaining arrangement that isn't repetitive. My own music has that issue. There are no transitions in your music using white noise or other types of sweeps. Is this because you intended the music to be that way or is it because you are having difficulty using sweeps to change the mood/direction of your track?

I did notice that throughout your track your drums seem crisp enough. I can detect an absence of many plugins on your drums. The frequencies don't seem to be compressed or shaped very dramatically. You must have good samples. Am I wrong?

Ultimately, I like your song and it is very chill. If some of my constructive criticism seems off please forgive me. I am by no means a professional. I am going to fish out more tracks to give my advice on. I look forward to your help!!!

@ CrewCutz

You have clearly learned about proper frequency management. Your synth and your drums work very well together. I liked the synth very much but I don't feel that it is being used properly for the energy of your song. I think that a lot of people in our situation find something that we like and stick with it too long / don't tweak it enough to make it work. I think your song fits into that category. An additional example is that this song (and my own songs) are too repetitive because we're not changing the oscillator's characteristics enough (or maybe even an EQ adjustment would suffice). I notice that when I listen to Downlink's music he is constantly adjusting his bassline every 8 bars to change it up - even if the note structure is the exact same throughout the song (roughly every 8 bars).

What do you think?

You're def getting there though! You show a proper understanding/control of your DAW. Which DAW do you use btw?
Dubstep ftw. Check out Cyberoptics if you haven't already. Hooky also.
