@ Gaol

Meshuggah is one of my fav metal bands so it's good to see their influence here. The intro is definitely too long and needs more texture to grab the ears.

I see what you mean by muddiness in your tracks. I can guarantee that the drum samples you are using are probably no good (unless of course you are exporting your track into a low bit .mp3/.wav)

If you would like help with your muddiness problem I would be more than willing to help you in any way I can. My email is listen_silent@hotmail.com. If you have time and a msg client it would be my pleasure to help you out.

You need to start with good 16bit or better samples and then use a good compressor/transient shaper to bring out the proper punch/gain for each sample. Again, I would love to help you.

I personally use Ableton, but the plugins I use to gain/compress/limit/ clean up my samples are usable on any DAW.

What ya think?

@ Difference love the intro bro, theres a bit of nasty static in there though sounds a bid rough imo, nice atoms after the drop, i find the sub a bit to loud, would turn it down a notch bro, other than that good shit.

@ Zala mean synth build up and cool percussion, yea bro the synths are fucken nice, old school trance feel, the percussion gets really nasty before the drop, drops ok , but you could prob do better, would work on ya sub bass a bit, well constructed track thou.

@Setroleben yea man nice tune every thing fits well except i think the mid range could be turned up on ya bass a bit,

@briskisgoodforu i like the melody you have going on in the intro. but it goes on for a lil to long imo, you could build it up a bit more with some FX, the hole track seems like a build up to some ting that never comes, altho i like it, i would love to hear a nice low key beat.

@ Stereoblen
Vey clear mix mate! Like the wobbles and the overal flow of the song so far. It's still a bit short, so it's hard to judge how it will continue etc.

@listen_silent
Love the progression the basses make. I'm a big fan of dark dubstep, so yeah this is awesome to my ears! I think the mix is still a bit "flat". The basses nor the sfx really stand out. But I'm guessing that won't be a problem in the end result.

@ darkdubz
Doesn't happen much in the intro, but I like the overal vibe of the song. Gotta love those old school reverbed wobbles and sfx in the background =).

Well here's my latest clip. I hope you guys like it so far ^^.

thanks for your replies (on http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5411394/growla03.mp3 - save as.. in case - would love to hear more opinions :))

@basebass: nice epic intro. could imagine the strings an octave/sept higher to finish the orchestra-sound. love the drop then, really freaking deep. bass is dope!
@darkdubz: really oldskool dub, bro! the intro is a bit useless so far, though.. very roomfilling sound in the actual song then. can imagine freaking out on it at 5AM in a club.

BaseBass - I enjoyed the build-up beat.
The vocal works well.
Maybe include some percussive elements playing off the kick, snare combo.
I preferred the build-up to the actual drop.
I`m not a huge fan of tearout stuff.
Good sounding track overall though.

BaseBass - I also thought the intro was uneventful but once it drops into the meat I really enjoyed the sound.
Cool base sweeps and some interesting background vocal chops.
Also a cool bright synth lead.
All in all a good track.

Listen_silent - I enjoyed this track and like what you are going for. Getting it to sound very dungeon.
I will agree with Basebass though in that your Bass and sfx are not prominent enough, cool sounds but not in your face enough.
In general your mix has some issues but I`m can`t really comment as I`m on in-ear buds at the mo.
Keep it up.

Here's the latest track I`ve been working on.
It starts out deep but becomes intense and psychedelic.

Somethings missing

Post by DubMikey » Tue Jan 31, 2012 3:24 pm

@Electric_Head - Maybe it's a bit too long. Loving the vibe and the atmosphere though. That midrange is really awesome, but I would like to hear it just a tiny bit more spread out.

@BassBass - The intro and the drums are spot on, man. Though I think it's a bit too slow when it drops as this really could be something to move the dancefloor around. I LOVE the "3rd country" kinda instrument hitting when it breaks down. Awesome work, keep it up! :D

@darkdubz - Drop and intro is a bit boring to be honest. Loving the movement of the mid range, really raw shit you got going. The atmosphere aswell is raw as hell and just spot on. The vocal too is awesome. :)

-------------------------

When I make a tune it's like somethings missing, it feels like theres this empty space that needs to get filled out.

I am working on an Ajapai - Bounce remix and I don't know what it is, but when it drops it kinda sounds so empty. When listening to the original I get blasted away when it drops.. Is it because I don't layer my basslines, is the drums or maybe the mixing? Hopefully you can tell me. This issue occurs every time I make tune, it's not just on this one.

Heres a short clip from the remix.

@DarkDubz - Yeah, this is a great track! I love this type of Dubstep. Have you ever heard of an artist named Elliot Mars? Anywho, the drums are really nice and punch and the basslines really stick out. The brief periods of silence in your structure really give the song an attractive appeal and swing. My only real complaint here is that it is far too short. Please lengthen this one!

@BaseBass - After listening to your mix I can understand why mine is flat. Was your song mixed that way or did you do any mastering type effects to it? Either way I learned something from your advice. Thanks a ton man. That's why I'm here! I need help that only other producers can give. Advice wise, I like your song very much and my ears definitely picked out each sample/sound clearly, so it wasn't flat. The only thing I didn't really like was one or two of the synths just seemed like they didn't belong. They were a bit too muddy compared to the brightness the rest of the track had.

Thank you for your advice guys. It really is a breath of fresh air for me.

@CrewCutz - Well you must have tweaked those synths/samples like a motherfucker lol :) As for headphones, I use Sennheister HD 280 Pro's against my Rokit 8 G2's. I like these headphones because they do make things sound a bit flat which means you can only produce better and they are really accurate at producing sub bass. I actually will use my headphones and not my monitors to detail my bass!

I use Ableton, which is a DREAM to work with. Super simple and straight forward. My buddy just switched to Ableton from Reason because of it. Reason is great, but Ableton is a bit quicker. Either way you must work really hard on your music if you create such clean sounding stuff and not know how you are doing it. If you would like any help I can give you plz let me know!

@Electric_Head - You are on another level man. I really dug this track. It is a journey to be sure. I can't really find any fault in it because it does indeed take me on a journey and it is nothing like anything I have ever created. I wish I could be more helpful, but I just can't. I guess that is a good thing lol.

Scy7he: nice dirty intro. You might have too much untamed and uncut reverb tho, muddying things up. Bass low end seems really muddy too, but I like the midrange randomness. Also, I think you should pitch the sub up an octave. Fix the issues and you have a great tune.

DubMikey: track not available for some reason, must be one of the soundcloud messups again. Will review, once it gets online again.

darkdubz: The intro is just great, love the mangling of the vocal, atmos, the melody, everything. And when the bass drops... amazing.. I love this kind of dark subby stuff, following you on soundcloud. Nothing to critique here just a big up.

Heres mine, been working on it for a few days. I need to think of a few more bits, possibly do more with the piano and then arrange it properly. Also needs fx and shines.

Brisance: Really basic… You just started out producing hé?
Get some free sample packs for loops (or pay for them) Play around with it… Check groove out! Every daw has it and it's pretty useful!

Electric Head: I love the production on this track. But it just misses groove… I know you are trying to make a really deep dubstep track… But yes! It needs groove, just a high pitched snare or something like that, to keep it going!

@Scy7he I like this one tbh, you just gotta work on having some breaks, just so its not all maximum energy all the way through (unless your'e barney stinson, then its ok) Its a cool track though :)
@Zala wooow. I really dig this track dude, really interesting and just filled with energy :D awesome job

Right now im working on a Zedd - Scorpion Move remix. its very sloppy right now, but yeah, its a WIP :P I gotta work on the mixdown a bit, and I really need to get some parts to flow together more fluidly, which is a bit of a challenge since its a very bassy-dirty remix
Ive decided im just going to take as much feedback as i can on this one, so everyone, fire away, i reaaaaally want this track to come to life :D

Oh and sorry for the shitty feedback, im in a rush right now haha

@Swaggr Really good tune, however I haven't heard the original & this isn't my style so Im judging based off of what I hear. To me, id put a tiny bit of reverb on that snare. It seems too 'PFTSH" to me. Your kick needs a tiny bit more mid range as well, its too much bass. Its needs to be more of a thump.

@Societyloser1 Excellent. It could've been more exciting but thats the style of it. I like your melody and your sub is bumppppppin man. Id add a subtle crash where it "drops", so that it flows into the drop a little more cleanly. Cant wait to hear more of this.

@Brisance Nice. Mellow-ish. I like your samples and everything. THe track is just missing something. Right now its a little plain.

@Scy7he Leave feedback for others.

Heres a new track of mine. I used ghast sounds from minecraft. Its dark and heavy let me know what you guys think, and what I can work on.

@swaggr - i loved the original and the way you've added these little touches to the melody line its great! I like the bass syths and arrangements in this! though i'm not getting much sub through? maybe turn it up a notch seems to be missing a deep bottom end when the drop hits properly.
@ BaseBass - Liking the groove on. nice use of the syths and their arrangements, when it drops. didnt expect the female vocal sample. nice! Got a feeling snare could use a bit of top end, maybe ad some white noise on top. let me know when this tune is finished would like to hear the final product ;)
@darkdubz - got a nice weighty feeling. like it. the reverb is set up perfectly. sub is deep man.
@electric-head - have to admit IMO the intro i feel is too long. maybe half it i think before the first drop. But once it does drop its so smooth. all the sounds here come out crisp. good mixing dude. maybe in the last section tone down the sub a bit as its constantly on that note for too long. give it some space by maybe not having it playing constantly, mix it up a bit. Hope that helps! :W:

Here's my WIP, more of a 4x4 kinda dubstep tune. Any feedback will be appreciated, you guys have helped me alot in the past! Thanks.
