Anyone for a "Weekly Sound Design Challenge"?

Post by SoundNuisance » Thu Feb 02, 2012 12:45 am

Taking the idea from the "1 song a week challenge". We will start it February 6th. I am not to sure how it will work, but my idea so far is this. We will pick a waveform or audio sample and maybe restrictions to what effects can be applied and at the end of the week every participants sound will be posted. No winners, everyone will receive critic equally(hopefully) and learn how to improve their skills. I know I will benefit hugely from this.

Rules
-Audio must be 0.5-30 seconds long. Remember, it is just a "sound" (bass, pad, reese etc.)
-It must meet said requirements
-Starts on Monday, ends next monday
-Upload to soundcloud, message me the link. I will post all the links in a comment.
-Will post on front page.
-Must comment on every participants work if you yourself are a participant. If you don't comment on all pieces you are automatically disqualified.
Vote for your favourite sound!
-You cannot vote for your self. I repeat. YOU CANNOT VOTE FOR YOURSELF.

Week 1 winner: Electric_Head
Last weeks winner (week 2) : misk

Current: Week 3, February 20- March 9th
(I am making this one long, it will be extremely hard)

This weeks requirements: This challenge has 2 parts to it. One, you must record a real life sound. If you cannot do this find one online or ask me to record it for you. Part two is where it gets tricky. You must re-create the recorded sound as best as possible. That being said, if you want to be boring you could record a saw wave and then reproduce the sound. Think of this as a line graph. Difficulty as the Y-Axis and Accuracy of Reproduction as the X-Axis. The Line starts at the top and goes downwards. In other words, if you record a very simple sound and re-create it perfectly you might not win against someone who recorded a very complex sound then reproduced it at an average level.
In summary. You must record or get a hold of a real life sound (snare, bass drum, birds chirping, someone peeing, someone vomiting, etc) and reproduce the sound. If you want to get creative you can do this as well, get a recording of someone saying a word and then make a mid-range bass that sounds similar, again that is just an example. Anything along the lines of that example is okay. Remember, there are 2 rules. You must follow the rules and you must be creative. Get on your physical modeling!
If you have a question, just ask it.

What about if we pick a tune/synth/sound each week and whoever comes closest with creating the sound (you can do whatever except sample the tune) wins? If that's what you meant then I am well up for it.

I'd be very much down to participate in this. I really need the practice.

Glad to see some interest. And it will be ongoing, I just put those 4 post as reserves you can call them :P @ Phase Down, yeah that stuff would be fun to do aswell. I think I would mix it up every week, one week original sound from wave form. One week resample some audio sample and another week recreate. If you have any ideas just PM me :)

@legend4ry I just put it at 10 seconds max because some people might want to make short melodies/basslines. Also I know some sounds used for "effects"(wrong word, just can't think of the right word) can last very long. I made a "effect" sound that had a super long attack and release, lasted 15 seconds. Now that I think of it, I am going to use it in my next track!

@dubesteppe Just to start things off simple I might just tell everyone to use just a sine wave and whatever effects they want. It would be interesting to see everyone's results.

So forgive me for my extremely limited knowledge of production terms, but is sound design just basically the manipulation and editing of a certain sound?

If so, I would definitely be interested in this!

And how will you inquire into a thing when you are wholly ignorant of what it is? Even if you happen to bump right into it, how will you know it is the thing you didn't know?

nasty distorted reese, probably with other (multiband) fx like phasers n shit + bandpass + gater + reverb on the highs

OT: why is there half naked chicks in every electronic music video that's either mainstream or hipster-appealing lately?

 , yeah but I agree. We could take a picture of anything really and make the sound you think the object in the picture would make, or something similar. This would be cool, well atleast I do think so :) It's merely a suggestion, it's OP's idea so do what you must.

I think we're on the same wavelength
let`s come up with awesome design rather than a generic sound
let`s not just turn this into a how to make this thread

either way, you all might as well give up :D
