I have dubs!!

Had a really great time in Transition on Friday getting 3 10"s cut. Also had a fantastic chat with Leon about dubstep and the future of vinyl culture, top bloke! Definitely recommend Transition to people who are considering getting this done!

Few quick questions for people who have experience with acetates...

i) How do you keep your dubs clean? eg. type of cloth/cleaning solutions

ii) What sort of tracking weight do you tend to use to play then? - I have Shure Whitelabels.

iii) Any tips on making the hole in the centre a bit bigger so they're easier to mix with? I know scissors work for vinyl, but aluminum is a bit tougher!!

Nice, you should post some photos if you get chance. I always keep them in the sleeve, haven't actually cleaned one yet kinda scared it might wear the grooves out quicker rubbing some cleaning fluid on them. Not sure what tracking weight I use, the bare minimum really. Saying that I had too little weight on to start with and the bass was distorting as it wasn't tracking properly, added some more weight and that sorted the problem out.

Here's my 12" I got delivered from Transition last Friday, track is in my sig. Was gonna get this cut on a 10" to keep the cost down but after reading some useful comments on this thread and http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=157248 decided to stick with a 12"

Isopropryl alcohol is meant to be ace for cleaning vinyls, cheaper if you just buy it as that rather than 'vinyl cleaner'

Nice pic man! Really feeling that tune as well, will keep an eye out for the release, vinyl I gather?

I started playing mine on too light a weight as well and they were distorting, and now have my needles set to 3.5g. I guess that's why people tend to say not to use concordes as 3.5 is their minimum tracking weight!

Nice pic too, ah thanks well its due out digital this Thursday but Gamma Audio are planning vinyl so there might be a chance if I'm very lucky.

This may be a good place to ask this, i have had my decks for 3 years now and never have kept a standerd tracking weight im sitting at 3.5 at the moment i saw that mentioned above is that a good weight for just normal vinyl as well as acetates, you would think i would know this after 3 years but nope.

Tracking weights depends on the needles you have. Ortofons generally have a higher weight than shures or stantons.

Im using stantons 505 v3s on one deck and sure whitelables on the other both around 3.5 of tracking weight.

Can't help on the cutting aspect but Templebar has a good few record shops. The majority of them are dub and reggae orientated but I picked a few decent records out of some other shops around the place.

They are great lads, they had Martyn in store recently and they run their own record label too.

What about selling second hand cd's on discogs like?It's all a bit of a greyzone i think.If i cut a dubplate and then sold it down the line i wouldn't feel bad.Cause no doubt purchasing a brand new wav woulda been the cheaper option for whoever was buying it from me.

Yeah but what if someone cut two wav's of haunted/anti war dub whacked a white label on it, and started selling it as dmz007?

Granted, you'd have to be pretty stupid to buy it, but even so, some people would.

if you have dmz wavs, you don't have them legitimately. they only sold as mp3s and only for a short time. unless you're turning your mp3s into wavs, which is pretty dumb.

nope anti-war dub was on some planet mu comp a while back, same for haunted i think (different label though)

So has anyone done this? That MAH comp has a lot of OOP classics. What would the cutting house say if you mailed them a CD and you wanted tracks x, y and z pressed.
On a side note I remember vestax made a press for home use.

theres something not quite as appealing about a vinyl with 3/4 tunes on each side to me, i duno maybe im just being really picky lol

theres something not quite as appealing about a vinyl with 3/4 tunes on each side to me, i duno maybe im just being really picky lol

I've got one plate from it (The one with Anti-War Dub and Versus on the flip), and those have only got 2 tunes per side. But yeah, they're only 33rpm. Just thought I'd make you aware.
