just curious as to how y'all feel about dilla? he made a lot of changes to loops but also just used loops straight up... or is it acceptable in hip hop? curious as to where you guys draw your lines
Listen to what Reark has posted, actually listen to it, now tell me what Zomby did was just 'sampling'. He's literally just cut the intro, took out some vocal, and added little edits to the drums. That's it. The main body, content, synths, concept, and emotion of the track came from Reark. Yet Zomby feels entitled to release the track under his own name, openly brag about writing it himself, then profit of it without even the slightest credit to it's creator.
How anyone can compare that to cutting up a sample of something and interpreting it into an original piece of music is beyond me. It's not even a copyright/legality issue here, it's the moral bankruptcy of it.
No offence, but anyone who thinks Zomby is in no way in the wrong here is a dickhead. This is pure theft.
fair play non the less, but that wasn't the route i was going down

Dilla stole a lot of techno/house loops without crediting the creators...
But usually once the producers found out they talked to him and he was apologetic and sometimes he even collabed with them afterwards

"Raise It Up"
The song uses a sample from the song "Extra Dry" by Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk. It was initially used without permission, as producer J Dilla obtained a copy of the song from a bootleg recording, and assumed that the artist was an obscure producer who was unlikely to notice. Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo however happened to be fans of Slum Village, and rather than demand a payment for the sample, instead asked the group to remix one of their own tracks; this ended up becoming Slum Village's remix of the song "Aerodynamic"
I think he did this a few other times, because he liked to sample house/techno tracks... I'm not criticizing him for it or anything

RE: DIlla =
Don't forget, Dilla actually created stuff that was worth listening to. I was never a fan of Zomby even back when I thought he wrote his own tunes... but now that yet ANOTHER theft comes out (Natalia's Song is hardly the first) - it is obvious this cat had to rip off in order to become mediocre. It was only his ability to be a dick that made him legendary.
