The thing with DJs is, the general populace tends to have lower expectations of them compared to producers and 90% of all people don't even really know what to look for in a DJ.

I mean, people of all ages regardless of background develop a musical ear, but don't develop an ear for DJ'ing. So in general, a lot of DJs do get away with being mediocre compared to producers. But I don't think it says anything about DJ'ing itself at all.

That's a good point for sure. Whenever I'm trying to record a seamless mix and end up scrapping it due to a small mistake, my roommate always bugs me- says shit like, "it sounded fine!" As a DJ, I feel like I can hear all of these little things that the general listener overlooks. Not to say I don't occasionally settle for less than perfect, but I know right away when I make a mistake and look around to see if anyone noticed lol.

But yeah, as it has already been said, they are two dissimilar crafts; only similar in that they're both music-related. It takes a lot of drive to succeed at doing either one and neither deserves more merit than another, regardless of the stereotypes surrounding either one.

yeah it's funny how true that is, a small mistake, or even a large one, goes completely un-noticed to the usual fan etc.

i find when i'm out and about hearing random club dj's i get annoyed purely for the fact that i have the ability to notice mistakes easily, or not even mistakes, just shit mixing.
once you train your ear to this stuff, it's hard not to notice haha.

Lets not forget that music is art. DJ-only people are essentially just art museum curators, taking crowds on journeys through other people's creations and artistry. Those who solely DJ have a passion for the art undoubtedly, but lack the creative desire and motive to become a creator of one of the pieces in the museum.

Love for the sound = DJ
Love for the sound + creativity + passion to make = Producer or Producer/DJ

im a long time dj only and i agree with this. I would never ever refer to myself as an 'artist'. all im doing is playing other peoples art. so the museum curator is an apt description.

ive used the orchestra conductor analogy as well. you control when the sounds come in and out etc etc but the artists are the ones playing the instrments and writing the music...
