Just a quick one, may have already been posted but oh well, I cant find it anywhere.
Does anyone have an idea as to how Kill The Noise makes the bass in Talk To Me? I'm refering to the bass that sounds like its saying 'talk to me'.
Is it made purely on a synth? (if it is, he's fuc*ing mustard) Or, has he literaly 'spoken' talk to me into a mic, and run it through a vocoder? Any suggestions or tips. I know there's plenty of tutorials for 'talking bass' out there, but none of them even come close to the growly talking bass' Kill The Noise' gets in his tunes.
I've seen a few threads about this now, some people reckon it's possible by spending a lot of time working on the modulation of a synth but personally I think it's a vocal sample he's obliterated then possibly layered with a synth following similar notes.
I've seen the 'How To Sound Like Skrillex' thread many times. Skrillex' basses, in my opinion do not come anywhere near Kill the Noises basses. Anyone can make a 'yoi yoi, jar jar jar' 'talking bass', but KTN talking basses are fu**ing having it!!!
Someone else said to me maybe a talkbox. Or vocoder. I know there's going to be sh*t loads of EQing, distortion, phase etc going on, but I'd just love to know how he actually gets the bass to 'talk' like it does, all the other sh*t like distortion etc is just to personal taste. If he's simply using a sample of his own voice, then applying effects to it I'm slightly disapointed lol, making that bass purely on a synth is some talent!!
Anyone know if there's any decent 'talkbox' plug-ins out there that are worth me messing around with?? Never used one before.

Thanks again for the replies! Peace!
Not to be a bitch, but not many can make the scary monsters bass etc like skrillex
And yeah, I still believe he just recorded himself, added fx and layered with other sounds.

i'm almost positive KTN is using malstrom. i'm honestly not sure if people saying massive are trolling, but then again its hard for me to tell a lot of the time on DSF haha.
I think the really intelligible part before the drop is almost definitely a sample being effected, most likely with the same chain, after the drop i'm thinking its all malstrom.
i remember seeing a video promo for a custom KTN combinator a while ago, i think it's pretty safe to assume he is still using reason, there is also another thread here with people talking about malstrom being a big part of the sound.
its probably the "voice-throat" graintable, it has a shit ton of different vowelly sounds on it, so much so that it's kind of annoying trying to get exact modulations out of it, just set the motion to 0 and fuck with it a whole lot. playing with shift and different levels of mod with the lfo sections are obviously gonna be necessary as well.

I think the Massive statement came from a tweet he hit Porter Robinson with... if I remember correctly. I messed with Malstrom and even then I can only get the normal vowel sounding type of sounds. Same thing you'd get after tinkering with FM8 or even Massive for a long while.
I am guessing, he's using Massive, maybe doing a little wah talk, and then layering the words talk to me somehow and making it work.
Getting the those constants are the trick. Sounds like Dak.. due me. Either way... really awesome synth work. Love that song.
i couldnt get anything out of malstrom until one day i made this project that was basically 128 bars, with the automation for the index increasing every bar from 0 to 127, it was kinda over kill but it helped me pin point exactly where i wanted the vowels and shit to start, it really helped me more accurately do the mods i was looking for because those bar numbers then correspond back to the index numbers. i would just play through the bars looking for what i wanted and blam. though im not saying that there isnt a shit ton more going on in that sound.
I seriously believe it's a vocoder. However, it WILL need some major tweaking on the bass synth and the vocal sample to make it sound like that! That bass is insane.
To me, it definitely sounds like a vocoder, I'm also 90% sure ktn uses reason but maybe he rewires it with something like ableton for massive (like me ). To get the right sound it probably be mostly to do with EQ, doesn't sound like there are ridiculous amounts of distortion on it. If he's using a vocoder he's probably pitched it as well, which means he might have layered it with a saw based patch or something in massive like you guys were talking about.
guys. listen to the bassline all by itself. it doesnt sound like "talk to me" until you read the song title and hear the vocal sample first so your brain interprets it that way. its like those videos where they play songs backwards and show you subtitles and you can actually hear the words though theyre actually not there.
so the bassline, which is just vowels btw, came first. then came the sample, which he then layered with the bassline.
oh and ITS NOT A VOCODER GODDOMMIT!
look, kill the noise used to be ewun who used to do dnb and has been into resampling for years before datsik even started producing.
now what im trying to say now is NOT that youll need to resample your bassline 20 times to make it magically sound good but rather that the individual parts of the bassline are made independently and then arranged together. dont focus on how to make ONE sound morph in such a complex way that it happens to sound like someone saying actual words because frankly that wont happen. even going from one vowel to another that doesnt sound shit (like most formant filters) is pretty hard to do and most people dont manage that.
so what you do is make shitloads of vowels and transitions like OAH YU OI or whatever kung fu noise suits you, make them fit together by processing them similarly (send all your parts to a bus with compressor and saturation or something, get shit to gel) and have fun building words out of your new formant legos.
just dont expect people to understand wtf your bassline is saying unless you're telling them first like KTN did.
