From a psychological stand point people have become programed to think if a lot of people seem to like it, it must be worth paying attention to.
The vast majority of people don't know anything about music, they follow popularity, then their own personal taste, then worry about how good it is.
I have talked to grindcore metal fans that will listen to complete garbage just because it's in that style, same with punk and any number of other genre's. And we all know how pop music operates on exposure(money), not quality. If we had the luxury of working with other top producers, in a top studio, and had a few million to blow on advertising we could all be big stars.
I know people like to crap all over Skrillex, but I think the album is damn good. But regardless of how good it is, if he hadn't met Deadmou5 no one would know who he was right now.
So a service like this used at the right time, in the right way, and with the right marketing campaign could be very useful. Getting the rights, right is the hard part.
And I've been doing online marketing for a long time, so I do know what I'm talking about. I'm too impatient to do it right, but I can school ya on some stuff.
