Over 100% of homosexual gays listen to, or have listened to Skrillex in their life — mostly while participating in door-to-door recruitment for sex orgies or attempting to molest children in one of the patented “Rape Vans” used by the gay homo community.

Congrats to him for picking up 3 grammys.
BUT, I'm not feeling the rimming that people are giving him for winning, have some fucking integrity man.

I'm not sure he's made people any more aware of dance music than the past fads made anyone aware of their respective genres. He's the next hype thing, and I guarantee that 90% of people who like him now won't give a flying fuck about him or dubstep in 5 years time (see the discussion about emo/post-hardcore a few pages back).llennnn16 wrote:He has made a lot of people around the world aware of a strand of dubstep and on a larger scale, EDM. For that he deserves recognition.
In closing, much respect to Deadmau5 and Skrillex, still don't like their music however.
As for making people aware, I really don't care who is aware. If I liked that sort of music, I'd like it if I was 1 in a group of hundreds of millions, or if I was the only person in the world who liked it. It's really not that big a deal to make people "aware".
Do I respect him? I don't know him. Don't know anything about him. Without this forum, I wouldn't know any of his tunes, and I could only name that scary monsters track off the top of my head. He hasn't created anything that's innovative or eye-opening, and he owes a large portion of his fame to bigger names like Deadmau5 (Let's face it, if you're as big a name as Deadmau5, he could hype ANYONE and they'd get tonnes of fans). He's just the big commercial act in the mainstream of dubstep, and I don't particularly feel he's deserving of my respect, and I'm sure he doesn't care either way. He's making his dubstep hay while the dubstep sun is still shining. There are people before him who have done the same thing, and there will be people after him.

Re: Brostep / Skrillex and the Forum.
Exactly. You don't need talent or even be able to make good music to win a grammy, or even to be particularly successful. The grammys and things like that measure popularity and how well you can sell records, not the quality of your music or your integrity as an artist.Electric_Head wrote:Lip syncingNevalo wrote:milli vanilli won a grammy once
If this is the future, it seems highly livable: shiny, cool and comfortably dissonant. Like a low dose of ketamine in an empty, luminous airport hall in northern Japan, eating avocado and waiting for the universe to arrive.

Gerthom actually hit the nail on the head. this dude does owe alot to more experienced guys, but at the same time had the bollocks to try something "NEW", and it worked for him. above all, the guy just won 3 Grammys. Bigged up Croydon/CroyDub, bigged up DUB Police, and said some really, really humble stuff. Props to him.Maccaveli wrote:This is one of the best posts I've ever read on this forum. Not particularly interested in who he bigged up, as I find most acceptance speeches a very well planned exercise in press management.Gomba wrote:

My point was that to my ear, he hasn't tried anything new. People were making the tear-out/bro/mid-range heavy stuff for ages before Skrillex came around, just that he already had a reputation within music and the support of a huge artist in dance music. There was already a market for that type of music, and the addition of support from Deadmau5 just accelerated his rise.
It's just my opinion, whether you do or don't like his music, he is just the most popular act in dubstep now, for a whole lot of reasons, nothing more, nothing less.

Re: Brostep / Skrillex and the Forum.
I'll start by saying that when I was first told about Deadmau5 he was described to me as similar to Daft Punk and Boys Noize. I found him to be very boring based on the tracks I checked out by him but wouldn't go as far as to say I hated it. I can't remember which tracks I checked out by him as this is ages ago. Of those 4 tracks you've suggested the top 2 sound kind of like shitty epic trance to me and I didn't find them at all interesting. The bottom 2 are definitely the best tracks I've heard from him though and I'd say they are ok. They are both about twice as long as they should be and have cheesy breakdowns but the better bits of them are kind of like minimal techno/house and I have no doubt he's been influenced by them. You should check out some labels like Kompakt, Perlon and Border Community.Sonika wrote:Thanks for the reply, but my question is still unanswered...what don't you like about Deadmau5's music?
I really dislike Skrillex's music, but I'd say his sound is pretty far away from Deadmau5's.
