Why has dubstep became my guilty pleasure?

Post by B_90 » Sat Feb 18, 2012 5:04 pm

Back in the day I use to be proud of being into dubstep, I didn't have to lie about anything, I could just share and enjoy.

I now lie about what music I like. I hate it when people ask me what music I'm into and I say "dubstep" and they say "yeaaahhhhh Me lyk rinse dem Skrillex tings cuz they iz dirty lyk my mans ass"

"nah I like dubstep, like mala and loefah and krptic minds"

"Maaaaaaattttteeeee that not be any lyk bare dub ting man, use got to listen to Datsik, you will shit yourseld man"

"errr...... I like beyonce and justin bieber :)"

This happens to me 24/7

everyone thinks, when i say i listen to dubstep, its the brostep waffle. Then they'll send me a link from some crap off youtube of a remix that is a current hit, i.e drake ft justin bieber (dubstep remix)
A brand new song!

Yeah, it's almost the same with me except when I say Kenzo or Kahn, they give me a blank look. Then I show them some of their stuff and they say "Yeah, that stuff's dope, I wouldn't go to one of their shows, but it's dope." ...fair enough *shrug*

i generally direct the discussion away from music, as i'm very specific in my tastes, it seems to turn into disagreement, for the sake of relationships, the other party generally hates that i honestly don't like the music they listen too.

on the occasion, bass music, very rare, real dubstep.

Just don't say genres it's really easy. Say artists and when they don't know what you're talking about change the conversation. Anyway surely most of you guys listen to more than dubstep? It's rare I find someone I don't like a single artist in common with.

I say bass music, the problem with a sound becoming the next hottest thing is that it quickly sounds dated, it happened with 2-step, grime, bassline, funky (kind of) and now dubstep as well. I'm sure this must happen with movements in rock music as well. All this becomes a problem if you associate yourself with that genre too much, which is why DJ BMC sounds like the kind of name you'd associate with a 2002 garage dj parody.

/
when i say dated i mean in the eyes of any casual listener, when u strip the music back to its bare bones not much has changed.
