I severely doubt that many US brostep producers have drawn influence from (or even heard of) Vex'd

I agree, why is Vex'd in there?

2005 Vex'd track with dirty mid-range wobbles (2:20):

Would I be right in saying that they were the first, or among the first dubstep producers to use those sounds? I'd be very surprised if people like Datsik and Excision weren't influenced by Vex'd...

EDIT: before I get lynched, I'm not saying they started brostep. I know one of you is gonna accuse me of saying that. I don't think the person who wrote the Wiki entry meant that either. But come on, they were the first, or at least one of the first, to use those dirty, aggressive midrange synths in dubstep.

Vex'd isn't brostep because his tracks have bassweight. That's my argument.

No one said Vex'd is brostep FFS.

EDIT: Also, Chasing Shadows is generally considered brostep, and it has bassweight. Your argument is invalid.

DOUBLE EDIT: Vex'd isn't a him, Vex'd is a them. God damn Sonika, so much fail....

Vex'd DOES use fairly mid-range heavy distorted sounds in most of their productions. I've heard stuff from both caspa and rusko that sounds more dubby then alot of what vex'd does.

Just because it has mid-range doesn't make it bro.

I can see where you're coming from but Rusko & Caspa did have that sound and then went over and pretty much toured the US and took it all over there... they were much more commercially known and would have influenced brostep producers. Vex'd, however similar their early sounds were to Rusko & Caspas early sounds, wouldn't have been very well known to these producers IMO and therefore would have had next to no influence on them. Rusko & Caspa physically went over there and shoved this sound in their face. Its also arguable they've adapted their sound to appeal more to the US than the UK, Vex'd again has not so I'd be surprised if they're very well known at all over there among the brosteppers.

Vex'd tracks have depth. Something nearly all brostep does not have. If only more producers had heard Degenerate then we might have a less cheesy brostep sound out there. Fire is also in Horror Show territory when it comes to sub bass.

I can see why someone might write that, but theyre clearly missing the real low end involved with vexds music. Same as ever, if you listen to vexd on shit laptop speakers you just going to hear midrange noise! (funnily enough...) Saw vexd a couple years ago i think it was at subloaded in clockwork, and it was just unbefuckingleivable. Just, so, so next level. It was mental. I mean, i dont know what the songs were, im guessing a fair amount of second album stuff(?) anyone know if they were playing out that stuff at that time? Anyway, the levels of sound involved in vexds music obviously has no resemblance to the 2 dimensional screeches of brofest.

But whoever said they doubt excision has ever heard of vexd is definitely wrong! Cant speak for any of the other broers out there (and to be honest i have no idea what excision makes these days, by the sounds of it i have no need to listen to it lol) but excision made a dubstep mix back in like 2006 or something, that at the time was hands down the most dark, moody, plodding thing halfstep music had ever made. It was just an original, genuine dark collection of rotten music. Amazing stuff, was a large part of the reason why im here now. Clearly someone who has been on this sound since dsy one, and while his tastes might have changed, that man definitely understands the roots of this stuff!

BUT, Skrillex was making this

Really can't see American dudes LIKE HIM that've listened to Vex'd

yeah for sure, i very rarely hear anything like that (which is nice!) so i dont really know it to be honest, but from what ive heard yeah...thats probably about right. Excisions just the one man i always make an excuse for, just cos that one mix changed so much for me lol and its sooo fucking rough! Lyrically nauseous! Jump on the track like BLEEEGH! Facking massive. Relistening this just made me hear vexd - thunder again. Which has led back round full circle to the original point...yeah vexd is a seriously stupid comparison lol

ive got to go listen to the bar kimura remix from the second album now...

Big up for posting this, looks big.. i never realised he was that clued up on the early sounds, fair play to him! I think a lot of us (me included) assume that because their fans are uneducated morons that they are too. Skrillex at the grammys bigged up the croydon lads and has never considered himself dubstep, which i think is a bit unfortunate that hes so hated.. cause he seems like an alright guy who has never considered himself dubstep and never wanted to be considered dubstep but has and is subsequently hated. Doesn't make his music any less shit, but at least hes not a tosser.. unlike a lot of his fans.

http://www.chinashopmag.com/2010/05/exc ... -dub-step/

that's the actual citation on wiki, which actually says a lot about Excision's relationship with Vex'd but doesn't really provide anything towards Vex'd being precursors to brostep

so this:

Some of those early Rottun releases were really good, espec. the Launch series...wasnt so much in-your-face, def aggresive tones but also a level of self-restraint on alot of those tracks which i really dug. Also liked Excision's Paradise Lost release, nothing much else after that.

I think the logical progression is pretty evident...

Vex'd make heavy aggressive sounds.
Excision hears this and is inspired.
Excision popularizes the 'brostep' sound in America.

That's by no means a slight on Vex'd, but come on, they laid the foundations.

lol didn't read all the posts but people seem damn dyslexic round here  for me it's clear that excision and datsik have been listening to their vex'd. no-one said vex'd are brostep. actually excision has even listed tes la rok as his main influence :o

Ahh. The classic Excision dark dubstep mix.

One of the reasons I am here too; vex'd are not brostep but they opened doors for more industrial style sounds.
