When did you begin DJ'ing?

Post by Immerse » Fri Feb 24, 2012 4:00 am

This may or may not be the right place to post this, but most people posting here seem to dj. I started producing a little less than 4 months ago and DJ'ing has always really interested me. It just seems like something thats for me, however i feel like i might be putting a bit too much on my plate by beginning this while still in the early stages of production. How did you start? Did you begin with DJ'ing? Begin with production? If so, how long did you produce before deciding you wanted to DJ on top of that?

Also, any college DJ's out there that are dorming? This is something thats really putting me off DJing simply because of storage space. Im a Sr. in high school and when i move in to a dorm next year there will barely be enough room for my current production gear, nevermind decks and dubplates! :corncry:
Buying decks and a mixer and beginning a vinyl collection seems like quite a big thing to be doing with just a bit of time before who knows what. It probably is a bad idea to begin DJ'ing at the moment. But at the same time i am not always in the creating mood, and just want to discover and jam to tunes. Has anyone else been in this situation?

just do it slowly - the thing I regret the most is going out and spending heaps of money on a shit ton of vinyl because I just wanted more. Build a collection slowly - only buy tunes you really love and will be playing for years, thats the kind of collection you want, not the biggest just a well put together few crates.

To learn just get 2 records and mix them over and over and over till you know them inside out, then add a third and so on.

Yeah this, try to aim to only buy tracks you really really like. I've got a ton of records that i've bought in cheap bulk discogs orders that sit at the back of my pile and have only been played a couple of times.

1 record for 30 quid can be better value than 10 for 30 quid.

I started about 5 years ago, a year before I went to college. I had a pair of CDJs, and they fit pretty well on my desk in my dorm. There was absolutely no way that turntables would have fit in there though. Once I got my own pad I immediately traded 'em in for wheels.

I lived in a student house so turntables fitted.

Bass heavy music through studio monitors in a room above other bedrooms didn't make me hugely popular though... Hahaha

but I couldn't give a fuck my house mates were boring ignorant stnuc.

Started when i got to uni last year so approx 18 months.

Started on the yee old 'Virtual DJ' laptop only job. Got a midi controller last year for Christmas. Currently boasting a pair of technics, djm800 and Serato SL2.

Also started collecting actual wax. I only own strictly vinyl tunes on wax such as DMZ releases, white labels. I have quite a nice collection that I add to everynow and then.

Heading to LA for a year in July though so looks like i'll be taking a break for a year... I might have to buy another midi just to keep at it though.. Shipping all that over is out of the question though...

Around about 1995 a few months after Ready To Die was released, which was one of my first dj purchases.

I bought vinyl before i had decks so I used to go to a studio with my mates, they'd be on the mic n me on the decks.... lol good times.
like shaan was saying, i think i went mad buyin stuff every friday and I never played it and ended up selling a loads of stuff on discogs.

To echo what someone else said, even if its something everyone else is playing and so and so has said its amazing you can normally tell within a few seconds if you like it.

Also if you do get turntables get technics. there are ones with more power and features but the clubs use technics so if you decide to dj vinyl start there.

Does traktor use turntables or a midi controller?
