He won the grammies because he happened to jump on the bandwagon of dubstep just as 'rave' music was starting to become the big thing in America. If he had been making these same beats in 2004, would he be so huge? Without DeadMau5? Without the sudden rise in popularity of dance music everywhere?...
Yes you don't need talent to sell music produced by yourself. Don't people realize the dude is bigger than deadmau5? And he acomplished in a year? And NOOOOOOO he didn't jump on the bandwagon. The bandwagon was composed by house music with electro influences. Nobody in the "bandwagon" produced dubstep.
The "If he made these same beats in 2004" doesn't make any sense. None of us has the ability to time travel.
hutyluty wrote:There are a lot of very technically accomplished amateur producers, who make music which is good enough, yet they aren't even signed, let alone winning grammies.
The key word here is "technically". I'm going to say this again... we're musicians, not technicans. You may have 20years of experience resampling your basses and it won't make your music any better. In the end, it's all about the melody, harmony and rhythm, because it's MUSIC.
People need to stop thinking as producers. You need to stop listening to tracks and say "oh, I don't like it, I don't like tuned snares" or "oh I don't like it, the mixdown sounds bad in mono" because that's the reason you'll never get pro. You're becoming a technician and you're loosing your musical taste. You can't make good music like this.

Yeah, great plug but not very good at making me sound like skrillex, mala, kryptic minds, pendulum, orbital, abba, new kids on the block or lady gaga.I just can't nail this sound grrrrrrrrrrrr

Music is music if your don't like it don't listen to it,it is really a simple process.I don't like jam on toast but would never think about having a long drawn out argument why jam just ruins that buttery taste.

skrillex supporters are the new skrillex haters.

the amount of sheer ignorance in this thread is unbelieveable. grammys as a proof of musical quality rather than popularity, "old dubstep is called dungeon" (WTF?), skrillex pushing the dubstep scene back when he was the singer of a teenage emo band that pretty much was the nail in the coffin of that genre, not getting how skrillex might appear bigger than the mau5 but actually isn't cause it's about who's pulling the strings in the background

i'll just add that skrillex is actually a puppet of the freemasons to destroy electronic music as a culture to prevent the revolutionary potential it would have otherwise developed sometime during this or the next year.
now that it's all about getting fucking mental in the moshpit, wearing nothing but neon underwear and fucking teenage girls again rather than being a subculture that's providing an alternative to how mainstream society works people's eyes wont open soon enough before the old ones reappar this december to establish their eternal reptilian rule.

Nah, the bandwagon was brostep, hence why people call him a dubstep producer rather than an electro house producer. People had been making disposable music with filthy screeches and stuff for a good time beforehand, borgore and doctor p and all that.. The 2004 point was that without all of this happening, the whole brostep thing, then Skrillex wouldn't have got so big by riding the crest of it's wave (whether he intended to or not). I'm not trying to argue Skrillex is untalented, just the pronunciation that VirtualMark said, the fact that
VirtualMark wrote:good music will sell itself. Most amateur producers make shitty music, and wonder why they're not successful. They'll bang on about not having the right contacts, successful producers getting lucky, any other reason that they're not famous. But the truth is, they're just not good enough and need to work harder.
which I believe is wrong. It's talent yes, but that talent needs a particualr set of circumstances in order to thrive and get succesful.

I'm going to disregard the whole technical/musical bit because it had nothing to do with what I was trying to say, though for the record, I listened to Skrillex Cinema, and tbh, the production was alright (not that i'm any expert on these things) but musically it just sounded like a string of randomised noises all strung together.

cos that would ruin a perrfectly good argument thread and mean i ad no distraction from my work :corndance:

According to all these people who hate skrillex, just accept the fact he's popular and that dubstep can be different and not just consist of what it use to sound like. Things change, accept it.

what other genres and artists do you listen to?

just curious
Drum and bass, house, various electronic genres, moonbahtoon, indie rock, breakbeat, rock, some hip hop (prefer old tunes), electronica, some acoustic, reggae (not much). Anything apart really from Hardcore metal and 'screamo'

It's not about hating change, to be honest I think artists like Skream and Mala and Burial change more because they are always attempting to be original, while artists like Skrillex make tunes that essentially sound exactly alike. So really, people who love the old sound and don't like the new sound are the ones who are supportive of change.

And him being popular is not a good way to justify your point. No one is arguing that he isn't popular.

Study up, listen to some old school stuff. I can tell you from firsthand experience that being a big Skrillex fan gets boring, FAST.
Im not a big skrillex fan and i enjoy listening a variety such the likes of Benga, Skream, Plastician, Burial, Distance, etc and I agree they are original and yes Skrillex does recycle his sounds but I still enjoy listening to him. Just annoys me that most people hate him and don't shut up about it

I'm going to come clean (twss?) here and say: I like Skrillex. There. Ah... that feels good. Wait. No. I actually love a lot of his stuff.

Why do you care if I do? Or don't?

I'm 43, have been writing music before perhaps a good lot of you were even born. Again, so what. I'll say this - I've spent way too much time talking about music, envying others' music, hating my own, the list goes on.

I call this Creahativity.

Meanwhile, someone out there is writing something new, something new to fall in love with. It's not me at this very moment. I'm apparently too busy writing about music.

Leaving with this: disconnecting the TV provider, stopped drinking alcohol after 20+ years, stopped caffeine, stopped plenty of other bad habits. Only a few left on the chopping block. Creahativity is one.

Almost finished making the "bubble" - music at the center.

Lurking til the end of the day, then I'm out. I like the threads here that help me progress my music - there's plenty of that here.

Not coming down on anyone here - just myself. My own bad habits. Thanks for letting me open up a little bit (damn, twss again)...

Badman like the best things, as a matter of fact.

So they stay far away from skrillex.
