Clicking in drum patterns or midi overdubbing?

Post by Nunz » Tue Feb 28, 2012 3:27 pm

Hey all, do any of you guys just manually record drum patterns via a midi controller, etc. Or do you click in the patterns?

Depends on the tune. A more techno-y track, some elements will be hard quantised. If it's a hip hop beat I've working on, then grid off and record in the hits to give the loose feel on the programming.

This. Usually if i have any kind of idea bouncing around in my head, I'll tap them out on midi. But, if i'm just trying to come up with something, i click shit in till it clicks. Then sometimes I'll go back over it a play it in, especially hats, or ghost hits.

Im a fan of clicking into place. For cymbals ill throw the grid on triplet mode (in ableton) and find a nice pattern. I have friends that are drummers that have no problem throwing on a metronome and laying down a solid beat. For me it just doesn't work.
