i have come across occasions where the conductor has had to use a click track in his ear while conducting... and i used to play strings as a child, you follow the conductor // the percussion section...

I don't see why a click track would help though. It seems as though it would get off beat pretty easily if there was any kind of drift or anything. Maybe if you started it like 4 bars before you started the part you want to bring in it would stay but.... yeah that just seems like it's introducing unnecessary problems. I see what you're trying to do, but a click track is probably not the best way to achieve this.

its a completely different context... if you are playing along to something that has a very rigid time tempo (like EDM) where everything is spot on time... there is little room for error... if you are playing amongst a group of people without a click track... tempo and timing can be compensated easily... not everyone goes EXACTLY on time. so if you are counting 1, 2, 3, 4 in EDM... you can be sure its going to be 1,2,3,4 with the exact same time between each note. that is not the case in an orchestra.

and yeah... that was my conclusion after testing it the other day. i was just throwing the idea out there for discussion... Im not an advocate for it

yep, again... i never said it was a great thing to do... i merely stated id tried it out and wanted others thoughts on the idea...

This would be like a DJ using a drum machine during their set, just not audible to the crowd. One of the Computer Music specials on house, I think Derrick Carter talks about bringing a Roland 909 with him to gigs in the early/mid 1980's and running it through the his entire set.

That's hotmixing though, that's something different - plus the fact that back then Carter was playing for hours at a time (same with Frankie Knuckles/Ron Hardy etc), so taking a drum machine down to stretch out the night was standard.
