Re: Artificial Intelligence that makes dubstep
Wouldn't this take out absolutely all creativity... and music is all about being creative. In musical terms anyway. As previous people have said its an interesting concept but it wont be anywhere near as good as anything made by a human, AI doesn't understand what is pleseant to listen to and what is outright shit.. it'll be strictly set to rules that it follows.
I used to do a lot of programming from the age of about 13-17. I also played the piano for about the same amount of time. Then I was able to get into pubs and clubs and decided to spend all my time getting drunk and working so i had money for beer. I'm nearly 21 now and definitely wish i'd stuck at the things i use to do because i've forgotten everything.. however fun my life was the past few years i'm now at uni trying to do a degree in economics while studying and doing countless other things on the side.. programming is definitely something i want to get back in to so i'm interested in seeing how this turns out. Stick at it man, your clearly a very clever dude... don't fuck it up and have to start at square one again like i did!

Thanks for the support my man! Definitely get back into programming. Maybe we can do a project together or something, I have a couple ideas that I would love help working on. And yes clearly what I make will not be as good as what a human makes. But there is an exception, a man named Dave Cope spent 15 years of his life [http://arstechnica.com/science/news/200 ... oversy.ars] Programming an AI called Emily that composes music. Because of all the work he has put into it, the music it makes is now indistinguishable from Beethoven and Mozart, etc etc. And when I say indistinguishable, I mean it. Professors that have studied Beethoven's type of music all their lives cannot distinguish the difference between the music this program makes, and music professionally written.
[http://www.switched.com/2010/02/27/a-ro ... -with-a-i/] It's very controversial. So if I do spend a lot of my life doing and working this program, maybe one day it could be just as good as artists. But I'm not planning on having this be a life long project, and who knows, there will probably be a new genre that is taking the lead by the time this AI gets good enough to be indistinguishable.Howell's [Howell is Emily, the AI program] pieces have also been performed for a wide variety of audiences, and some celebratory listeners apparently had no clue they weren't actually experiencing "human" music.

Thanks for all the support guys! It really helps keep me going!

This is an amazing project you've got going on. I'd love to help out if needed any way I can. Keep us updated!

I am actually using java to program this, not CS. I actually know many language, but CS is not one of them. We are a mac family, and I havent set up a windows boot on my mac, so I have no knowledge of CS, other than from what i know from other languages. Glad other people here enjoy programming also though!
Re: Artificial Intelligence that makes dubstep
Hey guys! I just completed the next task! (the intro) go check out my results I posted on the first page, you will find them under task 2! Thanks for keeping up with me and all the support! Let me know what you guys think of the results, or if there is anything else I can do to improve them!
Re: Artificial Intelligence that makes dubstep
CS meaning computer science. and to clarify, i will be majoring, not currently. still a sr in high school

Ah, I thought you meant CS as in C sharp. I was confused as I wasn't aware you could major in a specific language, I'm assuming thats still true. Cool man, thats what I will be majoring in when I go to college (im a junior in high school). Hey I have offered it to a few people, but maybe you could help me on some of my future projects! I have a few other ideas relating to music.
Re: Artificial Intelligence that makes dubstep
hehe i could. but i think you would be the one helping me. my knowledge in programming is completely limited to a year in web design (strictly HTML), and a year in comp sci (python and a bit of java). and i took those freshman and sophomore year, so ive basically forgotten almost everything, as i havent really been bothered to code outside of school. your aspiration and diligence make me feel quite behind to tell you the truth
. im going into CS because ive always been a computer/gaming person and i swear its coming close to the majority of my life is spent looking at a computer (probably a bit of a stretch
). the more i think of it though the more i think it might be a mistake, i may not even like programming at all. ive spent too little time with it to know. however i dont find myself with a passion for anything besides computers and music, and taking the music route in college would probably be a massive mistake if i never made it big and wind up with a useless degree and backpedaling back to momma's house!
thats the idea anyway

Re: Artificial Intelligence that makes dubstep
I wouldn't say your behind at all. Your probably more ahead than behind. A lot of the kids going into CS know nothing about programming (in OOL like python or java). You have already taken a year, so your ahead of the game my man! I myself love programming and think it's fun. Same with music production (maybe because they are similar in production). So I do a lot of programming on my own, because I find it entertaining, and rewarding. Well if you think computer science is a flop for you, I believe there was someone else in this forum that said they were taking audio programming in college. They used Max MSP. which isn't necessarily programming, but is very much like it. It's very cool, and it helps you synthesize waveforms with flow charts. Look into audio programming, as if you specially learn that side of computer science, you could get a job at Ableton or fruity loops or Propeller head. Do some research though, and don't take some random guy on the internet's advice haha. Other wise if you want to steer clear of Programming all in all, and just do things that relate to music. Maybe you could check out audio engineering. Or maybe it's called acoustic engineering. I think that has a lot to do with math though. And if you do end up doing CS and find its a mistake, I hear it isn't that big of a deal, nor is it uncommon, to switch majors. Good luck though!Immerse wrote:hehe i could. but i think you would be the one helping me. my knowledge in programming is completely limited to a year in web design (strictly HTML), and a year in comp sci (python and a bit of java). and i took those freshman and sophomore year, so ive basically forgotten almost everything, as i havent really been bothered to code outside of school. your aspiration and diligence make me feel quite behind to tell you the truth. im going into CS because ive always been a computer/gaming person and i swear its coming close to the majority of my life is spent looking at a computer (probably a bit of a stretch

Re: Artificial Intelligence that makes dubstep
good advice, audio programming is definitely something id be interested in. im going to try to keep an open mind and stay undeclared in college for as long as possible. as of now im really just going on a whim on what i want to be for the rest of my life.

promoting. I promoted for a bit, then I decided to stop. Half of the stats are from Promoting, the other half are natural after the fact. The easiest way to promote on soundcloud is to comment on other peoples tracks that aren't so popular. A lot will check your stuff out to return the favor! Also follow people, and they will check you out plus follow you.
Re: Artificial Intelligence that makes dubstep
Hey everyone! Just finished Task three, which was the layout of the two buildups. Let me know what you think of the results (I have them posted under task three). Do you agree with my decision to have both buildups layouts be the same? Or no? I would really like some feedback on it! Thanks for sticking along for the ride guys!

This is very interesting. Even if the final arrangement is rough it could potentially give you a skeleton of a song in seconds, which is something I'd definitely enjoy playing around with. I guess you could always make a template too, but I like the idea of turning semi-random into structure and almost working backwards. Good luck in this crazy endeavor, hope it goes well.
