The book was wayyyy scarier!. but, it was a movie my mum specifically showed me to desensitize me when i was super young, like when i was 7 years of age. scared me into oblivion. still one of my favorites. i guess i should read the book though? i read all the time, but i never read a lot of stephen king.
Yeah absolutely read the book. I know a lot of people who have only seen the movie, but the book is on a whole different level. I thought that I could never get scared by a book, but The Shining proved me wrong. Stephen King is a genius, but man he's absolutely insane too. He has a way of getting into the reader's mind and it's SCARY.

Re: TOP 3 OVERRATED MOVIES
a few i've watched recently that were underwhelming-
casino
shutter island
jackie brown - as someone said they felt this was underrated and this is probably true, the reviews and spiel on the back cover were overboard though

Whoever said Drive.
Really?
I don't know anyone who has seen it apart from the people who I watched it with and really it's one of the best films I've seen in a long time. More people need to watch it if anything

Haha, I watched The Shining at about that age, but sort of by accident. Woke up in the middle of the night, turned my (first ever) telly on and ended up watching the whole thing. I was terrified for WEEKS off the back of that.esfandyar wrote:can i say something blasphemous? i never read the book. but, it was a movie my mum specifically showed me to desensitize me when i was super young, like when i was 7 years of age. scared me into oblivion. still one of my favorites. i guess i should read the book though? i read all the time, but i never read a lot of stephen king.
Read the book as a teenager and loved it, but I still mention the film in hushed tones... there's an indelible Jack Nicholson shaped scar on the inside of my psyche.

Ermm The Room isn't hipster bullshit. It's actually that shit. Not a joke. It's become popular now because people have realised how insanely bad it is. Being liked because it's fucking terrible isn't making it overated...

Re: TOP 3 OVERRATED MOVIES
blueprint for Rushmore was Dead Poets Society...not exactly funny though..
It was filmed in Odessa at St. Andrews School for Boys - near my hometown...

Re: TOP 3 OVERRATED MOVIES
He'd be the first person to admit stealing and/or being heavily influenced by other people's work.wolf89 wrote:Tarantino is vastly over rated in general. Dude rips off and remakes films for practically his whole career but always gets mad praise for it.
Tarantino's a massive fan of foreign cinema and openly admits to stealing shots from other directors, often very old or just under-rated films. There's a documentary Tarantino presented on Australian cinema (I think) which is an interesting insight in to his viewpoint.
Exactly why it's a great film. Everyone picks up on, and loves, different parts of the film more, but it's all somehow excellent.wormcode wrote:I agree Pulp Fiction is highly overrated...I noticed I didn't love the film as much as I just loved certain dialogue and specific scenes.
Kill Bill though, yep I'd agree that's slightly over rated. It's a 7.5 or 8, not a 9 or 10 like people go on about. I think the concept of the film was executed about as well as it ever could be though.
My top 3 over-rated (recent-ish) films:
3. Inception - it's like the film makers tried to make the best possible film (it's well made) about the most stupid possible concept.
2. Avatar - looking good in 3D does not make this film any less shit. If I want to watch a long, non-interactive CGI cut-scene I'll play Metal Gear Solid 4.
1. Rise of the Planet of the Apes - absolute shit. It's not often a film is so bad it makes me angry.
edit - my main praise for Tarantino is his script writing and casting. You might not like his films but you have to admit he writes an excellent script and gives the right lines to the right people.
