If the soldiers didn't want to risk their lives or didn't want to invade afghanistan they should've deserted or never volunteered at all, it was their choice, not some politic organization's.

whilst i would encourage soldiers to desert rather than go to afghanistan (and i am committing a crime by writing that, unlike the post this thread is about), it's not always that simple:

I could be wrong, but I believe Bad Things happen to soldiers who desert.

also, they probably knew little about afghanistan before they got there. their intentions were almost certainly far better than the war they ended up taking part in.

all i'm tryiing to do is give reasons why british soldiers who've gone to afghanistan should be treated with a certain level of respect. this may be pointless, since all the posters in this thread seem to agree.

his point was about biased coverage of the casualties on either side in the war, which he's right about.

though he also went to insult the memory of the dead british soldiers, which i dont' agree with but he is entitled to do. (the soldiers didn't decide we'd invade afghanistan, and doubtless thought they were being sent on a much more justifiable mission than what it turned out to be. and they and their families deserve some respect because they've died.)

I believe that equating soldiers with people who went out there with the intention to murder innocents is wrong. Also, have you considered that perhaps at least a proportion of soldiers actually do want to go out there to help? I mean, clearly, you telling them how shit and pointless their loss of lives are is doing mankind a lot more good.

Yes soldiers know risk, yes they choose to join but that doesnt mean they deserve to die or that they have to kill innocent people, you actually make me laugh.
