Obscure tunes

Post by Muncey » Mon Mar 12, 2012 7:41 pm

Just curious, mainly to the DJs, are there any like really obscure, weird and different tunes you like dropping in your sets? I know a lot of people have travelled to various different places in the world and been to many different record shops.. is there anything you've picked up which you pretty much couldn't pick up online/is popular online and is avaliable/popular where you live?

Theres loads of genres and subgenres being thrown around in UK 'underground' music and even the real underground stuff is pretty popular by the ravers/fans.. but is there anything outside of the UK that you like dropping? Malas working on a Cuban influenced album, i bet theres a few hidden gems within the Cuban music industry. Same with Jamaica, i bet theres some bangers out there.. although theres quite a few reggae DJs pushing Jamaican made music still.. and i remember Kode9 talking a lot about Berlin on his Redbull Academy Lecture.. i'd never heard of the names he was mentioning but i bet theres some really decent tunes floating around out there.

Oneman a while back mentioned on twitter or his tumblr that he spent like $300 over in australia on records, i assume a lot of it isn't avaliable or well known in the UK.

This is probably the most obscure record I've bought to date, it's not overly obscure but it'll change things up in a set I guess!

I've got the Star Wars theme on vinyl as well, and Ghostbusters.

I'd love to close some hella long techno set with this.

I'd have to include these of course:

There's a few that don't have videos on youtube too. To be honest, I don't really have much 'obscure' dubstep, more techno, maybe a couple of bassline pieces.

I like that, would be a nice way to end a set at the end of a night. I know next to nothing about techno but certain dubstep styles like some of boddikas stuff and scuba have got me interested in it.. i bet theres some amazing little gems in techno that could be dropped into a scuba/boddika dubstep style set and would go down a treat! Thats another reason i made this thread cause dubstep has so many influences you could easily play stuff from other genres that blend in well with the set. Theres a lot of dubstep that would blend in well to some old reggae dub tunes, some dubstep that would blend into house/minimal house well, dubstep that goes into ambient, dubstep that goes into techno.. possibilities really are endless.

Its why mixing has appealed to me more than producing ever has and probably ever will, you can produce a track with influences from other genres/styles but mixing you can actually blend them all together (if done well anyway lol).

Now that we live in the 'internet age' I'd imagine it would be rare for any new release to go undocumented. That said, there could well be some musical scene forming somewhere that is more or less unknown to the rest of the world, it happened with juke and I guess dubstep before that.

This is probably the most obscure vinyl I own (this is the b-side, which I prefer). Persian psychedelic funk from the mid-70's! I had to buy a record adapter seperately to play this on a normal turntable lol. The tune is a belter though!

I have some bootleg Bruce Lee picture disc as well that has music from Enter The Dragon on it, dialogue snippets and various sound effects. it was pressed in Hong Kong, the pressing is pretty poor but it's cool to look at

I like the fact that DJs like Oneman etc are playing a mix of all sorts of styles and dropping in old tunes as well. My favourite DJ mixes are really eclectic ones, check out Flying Lotus' 'Lovers Melt' mixes and The Avalanches 'Some People' mix if this is your kind of thing! Not to say I think every DJ should do this, because I don't, but sometimes I appreciate this variety, keeps things interesting.

Better to listen to the album front to back, but here's a youtube clip

For obscure my mind immediately goes to Valor.

This clip is a combination of two of his tunes on his latest release, however these clips don't get into the more obscure parts of the tunes. Martian Mushrooms is over 9 minutes long and gets fucking nuts towards the end, definitely check it out on juno, the youtube snippet doesn't do the obscurity justice.

Have the record that this is on. Picked up the whitelabel from the local shop for like $2. Not really obscure I guess, but definitely a cool find
