BBC Radio Drop Dubstep & Grime From In New DJ's

Post by plastician » Wed Jun 27, 2007 5:30 pm

This hasn't been officially released yet but was going to talk about it on the show this Friday anyhow....

Unfortunately my show on "In New DJ's We Trust" has been dropped to make way for a new show showcasing the Nu-Rave and Electro scene.

I've just found out myself, the decision was only made final yesterday afternoon.

This Friday's special will be my last show on the regular Radio One slot, after which I will be deputising for Maryanne Hobbs in a few weeks before parting company.

Just want to big up Hermeet Chadha for giving me the opportunity to showcase the best in Dubstep and Grime to a worldwide audience on the BBC. And thanks to Charlotte Coker, Helen Smith, Tom Koenig and all the team at Somethin Else for producing my show over the last 18 months.

Watch this space though......... Plastician will not be falling off the face of the FM dial forever. I can guarantee I won't let that happen, its been far too big a part of my life for the last 5 years.

Respect to all who've tuned in, recorded and helped me out with tracks and segments on the show over it's course.

Is there any chance that BBC has new policy about Grime and Dubstep or do they find it to be offensive and violent in any way or am I just drunk and paranoid?

Back to Rinse for a weekly show? - This would be even better.

it is pretty awful how we have here a new sound, something that is continually progressing and picking up new artists, producers and listeners, creating an underground buzz, which should in theory lay the foundations down for the genre to become a force - like dnb did/has... and the top bhoys at the bbc are replacing this show that doesnt come regualrly enough any way - for a music that is nothing but a quick fad / trend, based on the 80s that wont last for much longer than a year and a half and gets covered on the play lists and other shows anyway.

Personally I'd rather go back to Rinse if I had a choice between the two. I do think that 1Xtra may support a dubstep show in the near future though.

It was a great success, unfortunately the show is supposed to keep moving onwards and rotating hosts every 6 months. I was kept on for 3 rotations which was good going still.

Also with Maryanne, Ace & Vis and Ras Kwame supporting the sound so well on a weekly basis they probably felt no need to have it represented as a specialist show on In New DJ's.

To your point, perhaps the sound is reaching a level of acceptance that it's no longer a speciality? Regardless - I was feeling every show I managed to catch.

Big up Plastician!

Yeah possibly. That said though I still get emails every show from people all over the globe who've never heard the stuff before so I think it was good that there was a 100% dedicated show on the station for the time it lasted.

Although it works in many movements, its still important we recognise both grime and dubstep as genres in their own right without putting them under the urban or electronica umbrellas.

It was bound to happen at some point. The show has always rotated its DJs (the point of it is to have brand new DJs there all the time after all), so I think passing the switch three times is a quite good result, especially considering the fact that DJs playing more mainstream and "accessible" music on the show have been switched out a lot earlier.

Also, Plastic's sets contained less and less grime as they went by, so maybe this pause from the FM dial could give him and grime the time it needs to get on better terms again when a new show is on the cards.

This show is one that I looked forward to hearing everytime I could get a copy of it. I loved the 22 minutes to know section too the entire show format was wicked. Back to the underground now.
