BROKEN NOTE:

Broken Note have followed a path of unrelenting sonic carnage and firmly established their uniquely heavy sound as an iconic mark in electronic music. Combining lean, considered, but heavy production skills with an appreciation of diverse rough beats; they are an unstoppable musical force that has been pummelling dance-floors across the globe since their inception.
Broken Note exploded into the scene in 2008, with releases on the critically acclaimed Ruff Records and Ad Noiseam labels. Since then, there has been a slew of releases (including a retrospective album on Ad Noiseam) on notable labels such as Boka, Prspct and Subtrakt and they are regular headliners at both Prspct and Ad Noiseam label nights.
Their slower-tempo sound can only very loosely be described as Dubstep, with little in common with much of the scene's output. Instead they draw from cinematic sound design in combination with brutally heavy bass - and combining this with more of the kind of dark and aggressive beats that can be found in heavy metal and dark drum n bass. Between the flurries of staggering beats are layered distorted leads, and filtered reeses that carry the music through auditory hallucinations of open and constricted spaces. This gives the music an incredibly tight flow, carrying the tune through relentlessly hammering beats and into beautifully decaying breakdowns, with an underlying sense of dark nostalgia.
Their Drum n Bass output is similarly disturbingly brutal, with undulating beats and bass that are unashamed to draw from the darkly edgy sounds of Gabba and Techno. It delivers a rhythmic pounding that has set dance floors around the world on fire with its astonishing heaviness. The result is both at home in clubs and the vast expanse of a decaying urban warehouse, inspiring visions of a dark and techy future for their music.

Ask him anything from how he make his tunes, to how a child is born, or maybe how to protect yourself from the clap!

KUSH ARORA:

It’s been 15 years of madness in San Francisco for Kush Arora, and the party has just started. Kush Arora has been sculpting cultural sound in San Francisco and beyond, branding his own signature imprint on bass driven music. With a hefty discography with collaborations/remixes ranging from Lady Chann to Eight Frozen Modules, Elephant Man to Balkan Beat Box, his sound has been sought after by futurists worldwide. Arising from the experimental scene of San Francisco, he carved his early chops not only in studios but working on sound design for the likes of David Lynch and games like Lord of the Rings. All shades of Dub, Garage, Dancehall, and Indo-Caribbean influences merge into his unique “Dread Bass” sound that has found him compared future riddim makers as Stereotyp, Muzlimgauze, The Bug and even Adrian Sherwood. Whether dj’ing bashment at a dubstep party, or working on Angolan riddims with Jamaican vocalists, Kush is always up for something new. Having just finished an EP with Baile Funk vocalist Zuzuka Poderosa, and releasing a hectic schedule of tropical, uk funky, and tribal sounds, his releases have been found on labels as diverse as Top Billin, Crunchtime Recordings, to J Dub and ESL. His performances range from Live Ableton Tribal sessions to full on Bashment and Funky with MC Zulu, Juakali, or Zuzuka Poderosa, and he dj’s everything in between. Recent production work has Kush working with artists such as Elephant Man, Cutty Ranks, Lady Chann, Balkan Beat Box, Zion I, Nickodemus, and collaborating alongside folks as Stereotyp, Jahdan Blackkkamoore, and J. Boogie. Do not be fooled however by his experimental nature, this man will slay any dancefloor he sets foot on. With these futuristic stylings, Kush wears many hats all rooted in Dub and Electronica. These influences can be heard throughout his diverse,10-record discography.
Active in SF, Kush is a member of Surya Dub which was awarded Best Club Night by SF Weekly for two consecutive years (2007-08) and has been at the center of the West Coast Dread Bass, Dubstep, and Electronica movement. Kush would find himself on the road frequently as ambassador for the Surya Dub Crew, opening for the likes of Flying Lotus, The Bug , SubSwara, Bassnectar, and Thievery Corp.
His tracks have been remixed by the likes of Rogue State, Eskmo, and England’s Steakhouse Crew. His work has caught attention of Pitchfork Mag, who referred to him as a “laptop musician extraodinaire”, BBC 1’s Mary Anne Hobbs dubbed his Brooklyn To SF release “a beautiful piece of work”.
