Lowpass 12 or Lowpass 24? What's the difference?

If I use a lowpass 12, what's different from a 24? What does that number even stand for? Note that I use those filters in softsynths. They sound different but I dont understand why. Different uses for this?

Those are the most common decibel-per-octave curves youll find on typical, phase-feedback style EQs and filters. If you can imagine a striaght line plotted on a grid... Every octave (frequency divided by two) will be reduced either 12db or 24db, meaning the slope would be steeper. SO in this case, since its a lowpass filter, if you lowpass everything above 200 hz with a 12db/octave curve, then 400hz will be 12db quieter then the original signal/200 hz, 800hz will be 12db quieter then halforiginaldb/400hz, 1.6khz will be 12db quieter then fourthoforiginaldb/800hz... ect till infinitum.

You have to remember there is no such thing as 'off' just 'infinitely quieter then 0db' in digital audio.
