That was my point above. If you NEVER reach $500, then I guess it would.

Raises discussion that, if a label selling merchandise, never reaches $500, what the fuck is the label doing?!
I make music as Forsaken, you can DL all my unreleased (and a couple released) bits here.

I bet there's plenty around though. Look how many shit labels there are on Juno, etc. Do Beatport have a higher level of quality control?

true dat!

Also on the Skrillex thing... the 117 is an error in the software used to generate the bpm field.
The real bpm Kyoto is 88/176... halftime being drumstep... hence why it's in the DnB section

Hmmm, hard to answer. Quality is pretty subjective. I think there are probably less labels putting out producers 2 weeks in to their career because of the difficulty of said label getting on Beatport. That said, I dunno how it works with Juno selection either. We've got direct label accounts with both (only use an aggregator - Tunecore- for the large shops like Amazon and iTunes, but that's an automatic paid for process, there's no quality control there - perhaps the money up front is itself a vague quality control?).

I remember when Beatport first brought the new ruling in, people were up in arms about it, but to me it made perfect sense, why spend valuable site real estate and hosting service behind a label that would barely turnover the costs of these things. The prices whilst they maybe steep to some people (and Beatport certainly take a larger cut than other digital shops), they have to spend a vast some of money for advertising, in house web devs, hosting support, infrastructure. They do actively push smaller labels (they've gained us traffic with coverage before), so props to them for that. Not saying it's perfect, but it's a good business model they have and seems to be working for them.

i dont think it really bothers them whats being put out tbh

ive heard some terribly mixed/mastered stuff on there, as well as productions that dont have a single bit of originality/creativity

i think they rely on the more mainstream side of the electronic community more than anything else....
