Um, you're forgetting people that have allergic reactions to the shit (MSG.) Folks with sulfite allergies often have serious respiratory issues when they consume MSG.

I think alphacat wasn't pushing for bannination, just pointing out that allergies have been noted, and that maybe not everyone should go out and buy a tub immediately.

we use it all the time in my house (chinese-american wife)

if you're ever wondering why your chinese food at home doesn't come out the same as in the restaurant... this could be the missing culprit

That's pretty much it. It has a very distinct taste that makes it quite detectable even in small quantities.

I mean, I've heard that it's a chemical flavour enhancer, but had no idea I could just sprinkle it on the shitty food I cook and turn it into haute cuisine. SCORE.

It actually gets detected quite strongly by the 5th taste bud (umami), which is probably why it gives a distinctive oomph to food.

and yeah, like magma says, this shit isn't bad for you at all
chinese people have very high levels of natural msg in their diets and suffer zero ill effects, its all just hype
it makes the shittiest food taste fucking amaaaaaaaaaaazing
aspartame also isn't bad for you
natural msg??

msg is artificial salt mate, natural msg is just salt

too much salt in your diet, just like too much of any one thing in your diet is bad for you

chinese peoples diets vary massively, peasant eat lots of rice and veg, the food is barely recognisable from what you'd get as chinese food here, there's also much much more fresh fish and often bits of animals we'd never ever consider eating

a friend of mine is in Hunan province, they eat bees. BEES.

the chinese diet is very very different to ours, and they suffer different ill effects than we do, rates of certain types of cancer are much higher and lower than ours

but.

msg is bad for you if you eat too much of it, like dumping mountains of it in everything you cook to make it taste nice.

That's the understatement of the year...

China’s Urine-Boiled Eggs Are a Cultural Delicacy I Will Not Try

If there's one thing the city of Dongyang is famous for, it's the town's local delicacy—Virgin Boy Eggs. No, they aren't the the testicles of children as one might guess, just regular chicken eggs...that have been boiled and steeped in the urine of elementary school students.

The recipe for Virgin Boy Eggs is quite simple really. One first collects a bucket of piddle from the local primary school. Only the water of boys under the age of ten is suitable. Virgin Boy Eggs are first soaked in in a pot of urine, then brought to a boil. Once firm, the eggs' shells are cracked to allow fuller penetration, and bathed regularly through out the day with fresh piss to prevent them from overheating.

Don't turn up your nose at the VBE, it's a hot commodity in Dongyang. People actively compete to obtain the widdle and street vendors can turn a tidy profit from selling them on the street—some vendors have been in business for decades. Each treated egg fetches about $0.25, roughly four times the amount of a regular egg. And according to Chinese tradition, a VBE provides improved blood circulation, invigoration and even prevents heat stroke.

Msg is naturally present in quite alot of foods. Highest in tomatoes, parmesan cheese (wonder why italian food is so popular?) and seaweed called kombu. Kombu is used to make the stock for miso.

Obviously if you go mental and pile it on every meal it's not gonna be good for you, but it is naturally of occurring so in moderation its fine.

Got a freind who's a chef who added some msg to some muscles and chorizo dish last time we were around. he swears by it but his girlfriend swears against it.

i'm not so sure.

The thing with glutamates is they get all of your receptors around your body going obviously, which is cool i guess if you're using it like a drug, but for me, it's not so cool when it's added to food.

if you need to put msg in your food to make it taste better , then maybe cook better meals! you find naturally occuring glumates in a lot of food which still give your brain and body a good, if not better buzz.

Unlike seasoning herbs and spices, i see no real reason to add msg unless your meal doesn't taste all that to begin with.

edit--so we got a fluoride thread, an msg thread...now for aspartame i guesss :a:
