i love metal to the bone. too many bands to list. just waiting on new albums.
Re: Death Metal - Metalcore - Deathcore - Grindcore - DUNNOCORE
I'm bored so I'm gonna chat aimlessly about Death Metal tunes new and old (and maybe some powerviolence and grindcore 'cause we love the rapid thrashy punk too, of course!)
So, recently there's been a huge revival in the Old School Death Metal sound. I first became aware of this regressive glory when I stumbled across one of my favourite releases back in '05. Dead Congregation, some unknown band from Greece, put out a tape called Purifying Consecrated Ground. I nabbed this on Soulseek and quickly bought that tape (now have it on CD, vinyl and their recent '08 full-length on vinyl). Here's a track entitled Auguring An Eternal War.
Pretty slick, huh? Well they put out their debut full-length in '08, like I said, and it was just sublime. Probably the best Death Metal I had heard in a long, long time. Here's a stunning track that's just as atmospheric, blisteringly fast and brutal:
Fucking hell, those riffs are insane! I hadn't felt that feeling listening to a Death Metal track since the time I first bought Cryptopsy's None So Vile!
And then came 2009 and we were treated to not just one or two great releases but enough to actually form a top 10 of great material. Funebrarum (members of funeral/death doom band Evoken) put out The Sleep Of Morbid Dreams which is slow, dark, chugging, heavy THEN insane, rapid and awesome:
but we also had material from a new band named Vorum. Proper old school sounding material that reminds me of a great '92 release by Morpheus Descends. It's fast, brutal and everything you want from a Death Metal release. It's a short EP called "Grim Death Awaits". Here's the title track:
Then there was Teitanblood who I had been keeping an eye on. Being the big Black Metal fan that I am, I always like to keep on top of Norma Evangelium Diaboli's releases and when I heard Teitanblood were working on an album I was mad excited. They're a Black/Death Metal band which essentially comes across as atmospheric Death Metal with really sick, atypical vocals (black metal sans shriek). The lofi production works well since it's done right too:
Okay, now the new has been fractionally covered, here's some older classics that I won't go into depth with but they need a mention 'cause they're all so awesome.
At The Gates - Kingdom Gone
Morpheus Descends - Corpse Under Glass
Dark Millennium - Inside The Sunburnt Thoughts Of Frost (my favourite Death Metal track ever)
Afflicted - Tidings From The Bluesphere
Baphomet - Torn Soul
Gorguts - Obscura (technical Death Metal without being a poncy, limp wankfest)
Uncanny - Screaming In Phobia
Okay, that was lengthy. Anyone want me to do one of these for Grindcore, Powerviolence, Hardcore Punk, Screamo/Emoviolence, Black Metal, Thrash Metal, Doom (Sludge, Trad, Drone, Death, Funeral) or any other heavy genre?

Re: Death Metal - Metalcore - Deathcore - Grindcore - DUNNOCORE
yes tomm do a grindcore one!
Re: Death Metal - Metalcore - Deathcore - Grindcore - DUNNOCORE
Grindcore: essentially Hardcore Punk played by sweaty metalheads that liked things simple, heavy, fast and brutal.
The most important band to Grindcore was Boston Hardcore Punk band Siege. Their demo tape/album "Drop Dead" came out in '84 (two years before the Repulsion album was recorded & three years prior to Scum being released). Here's a track:
yeaaaaahhhhhhhh
The of course we have, as mentioned before, two absolute classics! Repulsion who were one of the first bands to play Death Metal/Grindcore and probably the most influential Grindcore band aside from Siege.
And secondly, the most highly revered Grindcore album of all time: Napalm Death - Scum. Here's a track entitled Human Garbage from the first half of the LP (the standard tuning side [arguably better than the downtuned second side]). It's really as good as it gets:
So, essential stuff covered. And a year after Scum we had another British band with a new debut album. Carcass were related to Napalm Death. Their guitarist recorded the second half of Scum (the non-J Broadrick side) before their awesome album "Reek Of Putrefaction".
More short tracks, lots of bass and general awesome grindy heaviness!
My final pick for British classic Grindcore would be Extreme Noise Terror. They stayed true to the Punk ethic behind Grindcore and played really stupidly fast and brutal Crust that basically came across as Grindcore.
Breaking away from the UK scene, we also had a lot of cool stuff happening in America around about the time Carcass brought out their debut full-length. In '89 we had two of my personal favourites making some pretty fucking sick material. Terrorizer, after a run of demos, put out "World Downfall".
And Assück had their first EP Necroslavation.
From there things start to get a little bit silly so I'm just gonna post a list of really awesome Grindcore tracks.
Benümb - Cesspool of Human Sewage
Iron Lung - Complications
Yacopsae - Frost
Nasum - There's No Escape
Anal tnuc - Art cigarette (LOL so shit it's great)
Asterisk* - Stasis Is Death
Brutal Truth - Birth Of Ignorance
Phobia - Who's The Enemy
Discordance Axis - Radiant Arkham
Magrudergrind - Bridge Burner
Insect Warfare - Self Termination
Okay, that should do for just now. I can do individual album rec's if you guys want (couldn't really find a lot of stuff I wanted to on youtube). Hope people keep interested in the finer side to heavy music.

Sikth
Despised Icon
Between the Buried and Me
Born of Osiris
Veil of Maya
The Faceless
Ion Dissonance
War from a Harlots Mouth
The Boy Will Drown
Beneath the Massacre
Generally on the more technical end of the spectrum but there are a couple of more hardcore influenced ones in there too

I haven't listened to a new metal album in about 2-3-4 years, now.

Me neither really, thats mostly just stuff i was listening to about 2 years ago, the only exception is BTBAM, I can always make time for them, saw them at the Underworld last year and they played their album "colors" (my fave album ever) in it's entirety... It's a strong contender for best night of music ever (system and the many cardiacs gigs i've been to are also contenders)Dead Rats wrote:I haven't listened to a new metal album in about 2-3-4 years, now.

new Spawn of Possession album is really good
Re: Death Metal - Metalcore - Deathcore - Grindcore - DUNNOC
Last page has been rad, been meaning to listen to more Iron Lung for an age, albums?
Need a better general metal thread though;

Can barely read it here but all about the very bottom stage. Like how they've got it laid out by genre pretty much. Valley stage all weekend near enough, bar Nasum, Entombed & Arson Anthem!

That's as heavy as it gets for me. Although I am partial to a bit of core like Converge, Botch, BTBAM.

THE NEW FACELESS ALBUM IS FINALLY GOING TO COME OUT THIS YEAR. Thank god. I'm going to catch them at summer slaughter again. I wish Veil of Maya's new album was fire. It's pretty standard, but i can't really find a fault with it. Anyone know of a cannibal corpse tour coming up? My google powers are school-locked. Haha.
And i really need to get back into deathcore. Oceano and their bass bombs. Doesn't the new vocalist for ABRB suck or something? Fuck i'm glad someone bumped this thread.

Tbh you ain't missing much. Oceano's second album is nowhere near as good as Depths. They went down that srs death metal 2nd album route...Killamike49 wrote:THE NEW FACELESS ALBUM IS FINALLY GOING TO COME OUT THIS YEAR. Thank god. I'm going to catch them at summer slaughter again. Whitechapel is the only deathcore band I'm still excited about tbh. Ok, maybe Carnifex too.
Re: Death Metal - Metalcore - Deathcore - Grindcore - DUNNOC
Jesus fucking Christ. Looking back at my preferred taste in metal in this thread is frankly embarrassing. Calling BMTH's new album good with 'little electronic elements, not overused'...it's like I don't know the tnuc who wrote that.
I wonder if my taste has DEVELOPED or I've just become more critical of the things I listen to...hmm...

I was wondering whether you would come back and condemn your first post

Condemn your MUM, mate, she's had more bums than a second-hand toilet seat.
