Cause my hd space is very special,it only contains my sample library and a folder of the finest porn known to man.
It lacks room for a crummy folder made by some chap off an internet forum who is to lazy to search for you tube links to post as examples for sounds he wants to create.
Also how do i know your not some nerd with a folder full of viruses?
You could be part of that group anonymous with some hack programme to steal my porn and distribute it across every continent and i'm not to sure jackie wants the world to know how many dicks she can take in one hole.

Yeah thanks for the tips, its always interesting to read how someone else does things. Also good to know that you've been doing it a while - i sometimes feel i'm not progressing fast enough but then read that it takes most people a few years to get good.

Ill be completely honest mate its not the easiest of things to teach yourself but i truly believe that over complicating it is where a lot of people fall short.Less is more and all that bs.
I would gladly make tunes with anyone on this forum 1 to better myself and 2 to help the other person too.I know hardly anyone that does this,so finding tune buddies for me is what it is about and there is a great collection of heads on this forum with some quality music.

Glad i could help you with my reece,i think just make it as big as possible trying to introduce as much movement as possible and then when you come to adding pitch bends you will be surprised how much it can affect the sound and make it a lot heavier.

that sounds good, those quick wobbles a second in, did you just slap on a filter or a gate effect or is it all in modulation in your massive preset?

Thats just a filter in logic, just whacked it on to see what would happen, theres a bit of effectrix on some parts of the bass as well. Theres about 6 or 7 different Massive patches in that bass with just different parameters changed and stuff.

I'd be up for making a tune sometime. I'm away for a couple of weeks for work so won't be able to do anything until i get back. I'm not at the same skill level as you, but check my soundcloud if you like and let me know.

Dark, brooding, garage-y reeses? How do I make em?

Post by Sonika » Sun Apr 08, 2012 7:20 pm

So I don't even really know how to make a reese, I've never really made any dnb or types of music that rely heavily on reeses. However, I always want to expand my production knowledge, and I've been listening to a lot of dark, El-B ish garage lately.
That type of music likes to incorporate this sort of dark, atmospheric, almost "brooding" style of reese. I'd love to know where to start when making those.
All of the tutorials on reeses are about really "in your face" Reese basses, and that's all fine and good but it's not really what I'm looking for.
I know it has something to do with detuned saw waves, but when I set up two detuned saw waves in massive they just sound like crappy noise.

Ideas/advice? I'm talking about the stuff in productions by artists like El-B, Burial, etc.

Try following an "in your face" reese tutorial as you put it, but take the result and apply a low pass filter and perhaps some reverb or flanging?

Hmm yeah that could work but I think there are some more fundamental compositional differences in the sound design.

Quick reece example if you use massive 2 osc one set to 0 the other -11.85 on the pitch for the detuned sound.
Go to voices page, unison set to 2,unison spread turn on pitch cutoff adjust to taste.
I always normally set it to monophon with legator triller for glide.
In the filters you can either just use a low pass but i think you get a much dirtier sound by setting the filters in series in the first filter use a double notch with resonance turned all the way down and cutoff around 11 o clock'ish,on filter 2 lowpass with resonance set to taste and cutoff about 12 0 clock to get it sounding dark. You can add the third osc if you want to thicken the sound up a bit, also bit of white noise and some feedback won't go amiss.Effects it doesn't really matter for this type of sound because your lowpassing it and normally the low end can be quite muddy so its more about the eq'ing and dynamic control.
I would also suggest for this type of sound absynth is better but massive is far easier to programme.
Hope that helps.

Not really, you posted a tune a while back that has the sound your after i think and it did just sound like a basic reece low passed.
It was a kryptic minds tune, could of been the remix of lungs afterlife i think,if you listen i believe the bass sounds very similar to ray keith's terrorist which is a very early dnb tune. One from my youth fuck i'm old.

Thanks! So what you said first about the voices, I always like to play with the voices, but can you give me an exact definition of what they really ARE? they seem to fatten the sound, sort of.
And also please explain "pitch cutoff." regular cutoff deals with the EQ, so what does pitch cutoff do?

And yeah the kryptic minds afterlife remix reese is pretty much that ideal sound, I still can't quite nail it although it seems pretty easy to make :u: and unfortunately I can't afford absynth at the moment, I'm dropping pretty much every last cent I have on buying some CDJ200s and a mixer from mikeyp.

Right voices, the easiest way i can think of explaining it.1 voice=1 key on the keyboard 2 voices=2 keys held on the keyboard.what the voices tab basically does is double when set to 2 or adds as many as you set,it just makes the sound fucking huge.Pitch cutoff in the unison spread just knocks all the voices out of phase by detuning them i believe hence why you don't really want to crank it rite up because it will sound crap.
Massive is capable i'm just not a huge fan,i prefer the reece sound out of absynth and fm8 more,fm8 for the really brash nasty reece's.

Some serious shit rite there, ray keiths chopper tune aswell spawned one of the most played dnb tunes in the history of dnb when i was 15,if i can find it i will post a link.Every tape pack i bought this tune was on in nearly every set for about a year. There was no escape, saying that it was a meaty track.
