cheers ya'll

more i think about it, we started this in cubase SL (!) and a bunch of the drum sounds are from an alesis D4 that i sold years ago... and then the studio where i keep my drums just re-bought one to use as a drum trigger processor. the more things change...

Meetu, the singer, is currently in Cirque de Soliel on tour in Europe. Zuzuka, the rapper, is on the road to superstardom.

all the blown-out bollywood vocal sound on meetu was done live-- slammed mic pre, slammed compressor, thru a bandpass filter and recorded in the most ambient room i could find-- my hallway. scary but very fun recording that way-- you better be committed to that sound, cuz it's what you're getting! Her being a fantastic singer made it extremely easy.

the strings, horns, and live-sounding guitar/bass/drums samples were all done w/ stock exs24 samples in logic, with a shitload of overdrive and bandpassing. strings and horns were resampled to get that choppy vibe...

I'm loving the Asian influence in all of your tunes, man.

EDIT: Woah, collabed with Panjabi MC?

dubplate style mate. tried but could never clear the vocal, and I like that it exists as a tune that had its run in '08.

@atticuh, haven't collaborated w/ PMC, but he's old-school family in the Basement Bhangra world; glad to have him in the vid.

dude... it would be awesome to hear more bhangra influence in edm, but i think that barely anyone who isn't punjabi listens to it (except me). i have a WIP with heavy dhol beats and glitch bass. i think it's an awesome combo

the bassline in this does sound proper old school! if i know my history the bass station was one of the first 303 clones no?

sounds a lot like some early brazillian funk, circa 2000. class a production.

edit: yeah it's old brazillian funk.

yup one of the 1st 303 clones. has a great triangle bass; ultimately it wasn't as useful as i'd hoped. granted, nearly 8 years after i bought it, i'd probably use it more these days... of course.

bhangra and EDM have had a long and contentious history; from cassettes in the late 80s, to the awesome "deep in the jungle" comp on moviebox, and on...i've got a slew of d&b 12"s from the late 90-s mid 2000s that did it well, but it was always a niche thing, never finding real d&b acceptance and rarely, if ever, finding anything other than spite from the punjabi world. i haven't touched the idea of the 2 in about 5 years, since doing some remixes... bigger, and potentially more successful, fish to fry.

FWIW i think my boys tigerstyle are the absolute tits when it comes to modern bhangra production, moving it into properly uncharted territories.

No offense, Sharm...but I'm sure that if this post was by anybody else, they'd be told that there is a subforum and stickies for this type of stuff. That being said, I haven't had the opportunity to listen yet and I'm expecting some quality tune-ness :6:

hmm. i'd really like to hear those dnb cuts. note that i'm a white boy from california, so obviously my knowledge in this area is... limited and internet based. but i think the rhythm of bhangra is divine, and i have to use it. i am in no way hindered by the consideration of potential success or appeal of anything, i do music only for my own love and that of like minded individuals, so i have all the time in the world to mix and match and experiment with this idea. i think it's a combination that really deserves to be perfected.

first really great one that comes to mind:

http://www.discogs.com/Nat-Clarxon-Dhol ... ase/212223

was an absolutely dead-in-the-water release, but is really great for dancefloors.
