How to make this tech house-y sound? Soundcloud
I can get close to the sound, but never this clean sounding :( I recognise its got some really good compression and EQ-ing on it, but I feel quite confident in my ability to EQ and compress

yeeeep it's definitely some side-chain compression that's been smothered on there...
just experimented with this and it seems to be all about your attack and release settings.
I couldn't get anything super clean either. It probably is dependent on the quality of the compressor you are using.
Also maybe (I'm thinking now, you can probably smell the asbestos burning) you could side-chain an actual amplitude duck as well, rather than compression? idk i'm a bit compressor ignorant.

Here's one for ya'll:
Drop is at 54 seconds

I'm very interested in Hizzle Guy's use of distortion here...
underneath the distortion (if you can picture it with your ears :corntard: ) the sounds are pretty simple.
it's so dissonant... or is that just some feedback of some sort?

I use the PSP sonnox compression which is one of the best out there imo so I don't think its all about the compressor...
EDIT: For that sound, sounds like some decimort (D16) and then a load of bitcrushing and overdrive. I think all he's actually used for the sounds are squares and a saw here and there. Make sure to use lots of little bits of distortion instead of just one or two plugins. Do about 3 instances of quite subtle distortion, EQ, resample, then repeat the process is what I find works best.

I think I posted this one before, but didn't get an answer.
How do I get this gritty wobble at 0:55?

I have Albino, Massive, and the Reason synths.

The little wobble starting at around 3:03 anyone know how?!?:

Aaand if anyone can add - any general tips on how to make a tune so tight? So infuriating! So good! Everything just sounds so pristine.

I have reason so i was dicking around in maelstrom... find a suitable waveform and send it through the shaper. You can use a lot of quantization, or a moderate amount of sine or saturation distortion. Your filter/lfo should be a downwards ramp wave form.
I'd make a couple copies of this synth and then make some slight tweaks to beef up the sound. Distort. if you are trying to get similar automation, try automating the filters frequency upward as the lfo is retriggering it. I also found that slapping on a chorus, turning down rate and mod amt. to 0, and then automating the chorus delay just a lil bit helps give the sound a similar character to the tune above.

Sounds like a sine wave with a comb filter and distortion on it :) Its a lot more complicated than that, but if you want to look into the sound more thoroughly I recommend Icicles masterclass, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCSeVkRMYMI
As for the tightness of the tune, its just practice I think, getting your mixdown right is the main thing, and also being selective with your sounds and not having too much stuff going on at once.

Safe man, that tune in your sig is also really nice and polished, sounds sick! Did all the individual elements like your synth start out that clean in the first place?

Would love to know how you make this classic Detroit synth. I cannot even tell if it is a chord but it mostly like is!

Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

So it isn't January anymore, BUT I MUST figure out how to make a synth similar (doesn't have to be exact) to the one shown below. I have access to Reason 5, NI Massive, and FL Studio.

Soundcloud

I've been trying for so long you guys don't even know, please help out!

The main one that starts at 0:28 in the Soundcloud track I put in my original post.

Maybe try a moog sounding thing?
I think it's just a saw with a lowpass filter on it that closes rather fast. Could be wrong, but it's not that far off :)

^^^yeah just an enveloped LP Saw with a bit of resonance. Having a good source waveform probably helps.

OK, so I've been trying to replicate the tone of the synths Coki uses today but am coming up short.

It's been covered a few times on here, and so far I think;

-Subtractor
-Metallic waveform FM'd with a Triangle
-Notch Filter
-Skream Distortion, with mid turned up.

Still missing the bite/character though. I'm not interested in the automation of the parameters, just the tone.

I've read some reference pitch-shifting, freq-shifting...anyone have any luck with either of them? I used a Freq Shift at about 400hz and it just muddied it, rather than adding the clarity I want. Similarly I've tried wave-shaping but it makes the sound almost too harsh.

Maybe it's just careful EQing? I don't know, might sound just sounds flat in comparison. Attempt at layering muddy the sound as well, as multiple instances of FM'ing just ruin the low-end. :?

Anyway, here is any example of what sort of sound I'm going for;

Coki - Ransom, 0:55

Coki - The Sign, 0:24

Mala - Eyez, 0:50

Cheers. :4:

Sadly not, a lot of producers like to just have a patch in massive and maybe some EQ and compression, I'm all for heavy resampling and massive effects chains though :L Thanks man!
