Lunch BREAK whattttt?????

Post by OfficialDAPT » Fri Apr 13, 2012 5:32 pm

I'm on my lunch break and I have a few quick questions. Ever since I started making dubstep like 6 months ago, I've had trouble structuring the drop sections in my songs. I have trouble making the sounds I put in there fit together. Anybody have any advice to help make my drop sections flow better overall?

well it depends what you are trying to fit together...

I find it easier to incorporate a melody thats familiar to the song for the listener, and vary my bass sounds by using subtle differences like filter movement, wavetable, some fx,

try to avoid making sounds that are VERY different, because yea, its going to be hard to make them sound like they fit together

If you're still on lunch ( :6: ), and if you have the ability to use some kind of keyboard or sample trigger instrument, then jam it out live. Load up a big pile of the samples and shit that you wanna use and actually play them instead of sequencing them.

Also, find out as best you can what key your main drums seem to be near, esp. the kick and snare. They will not always have a detectable pitch, but just give it a try. Now compare those pitches to those in the other parts of your song. Adjust as needed.

When worse comes to worst, throw out the weaker of the two parts that's not jibing with the rest of the song and bring in something random or totally new.

Think of your song as one big drop...

Try a call and response type structure, with one bass calling and the other answering. Have different types of filters and bass sounds and try to make them fit. Also make sure the levels are in check and eq them so the change isn't too drastic. Routing all basses to the same bus and further processing can help them sound as if they fit together better.

This is the first thing that comes into my head when I hear call and response.

She loves you (call)
Yeah yeah yeah (response)

its just one way to structure a tune: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_and_r ... 28music%29

have 2 different basses kinda talk to each other. i find it hard to explain, as i'm still trying to learn it myself. but i have noticed this sort of structure in quite a few tunes.

i think this is call and response, if you listen to the drop there is usually 2 different basses, and 2 different phrases:

I could picture it in the vocal sense and in the sort of duelling banjos way and that datsik tune was close to what I imagined it sounding like in a bassline way, thanks.

This is one of the best examples of call and response that I can think of in dubstep...
you can hear which wobbles are funtcase and which are datsik, yet it flows so nicely.

Make sure to have contrast. It's easy to think right I want a fast bass and just go

d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d

You want to break it up to emphasise certain sounds. so instead do this

duuuun d d d d d d d d d d d d

If that makes sense? my intelligibility is pretty shot today so I'm just gonna say make it groove 8)
