For anyone moaning about it and saying they want to get away- London gets about 15 million foreign visitors every year (so more than1 million a month in the summer months) and is a city with a metropolitan area of 12-14 million. 850,000 people have bought tickets, not every event is in London and many of the people going are from London and UK (so a lot less than 1 million extra during the Olympics), there are even reports that foreign holiday bookings to London are down over the olympic weeks. The main stadium has an 80,000 capacity- less than Wembley and not far off plenty of the London football clubs, life doesn't become shit when they are used every week does it?!? London will handle it fine, even if it is a bit busier than usual then it's 2 weeks of your life for something that really is a once in a lifetime thing to have in your home city. Nothing to moan about- embrace things rather than looking for negatives.
Who's going to the Olympics?

i'm not really sure if you're serious or not, but do people actually say "squid" instead of "quid"?magma wrote:No.mylon wrote:is that a typo?AxeD wrote:Always thought tickets would all be + 100 squid..
Re: Who's going to the Olympics?
yes. on the animal theme, you can also have a monkey (£500) or a pony (£25). and there's a score, fiver, tenner, ton, grand....am sure there are plenty more too can't think of right nowmylon wrote:i'm not really sure if you're serious or not, but do people actually say "squid" instead of "quid"?magma wrote:No.mylon wrote:is that a typo?AxeD wrote:Always thought tickets would all be + 100 squid..

I got tickets to the track on the day of the 200 metre semifinals.

Re: Who's going to the Olympics?
mark my words:
ultimately the London Olympics will screw London & the UK,
leaving the poor poorer & the rich richer
but meanwhile
nearby ninjas should leave their cynicism behind,
forget about dismissing it as just more tourists
coming to what you think of as already the centre of the known universe
this is different,
this is being in the eye of the zeitgeist
like you will never experience again
(unless you're in One Direction)
the barriers come down
& perfect strangers smile & chat
in a love-in of peace & tolerance
as cherubim gambol in halcyon skies
it's like a city on e for two weeks
don't miss it.
imo It's time for The London Olympics 2012 thread
because they're on the homie stretch.

London deals with millions of tourists every day, I think we'll be alright, you know.
I'm not even really into athletics, but I can't wait to watch some freaks of nature run for their fucking lives for my entertainment.
Still wish I'd got the BMX tickets.

Re: Who's going to the Olympics?
sd5, i am usually a great fan of your poetic posts, but just curious as to why you think the Games will "screw London and the UK"?
Agreed the costs that were initially projected have increased A LOT (from £3bn to £12bn) but ultimately the Games do provide an unbelievable opportunity for some tourist-based cash injection; and the new facilities built around the country will provide more employment, post-games, for 3000 grassroots coaches from 2013, which i will be!
So obviously i am biased but are you speaking from experience, or just opinion?
And of course you aussies will win more medals overall because the Australian Sports Commision intentionally target "soft sports"

Re: Who's going to the Olympics?
@ parkour_nico
in retrospect, the Sydney Olympics buggered the place
by projecting such an sunny, welcoming & secure city to the world
that it subsequently attracted heaps of foreign money investing in real estate
& scammers wanting to get in on the action.
Consequently, years on, house prices are largely unaffordable for locals
and what were the most liveable areas have been taken over by wealthy business migrants.
The big venues built for the Olympics are economically unsustainable,
so the state government allows them to draw sporting events thru inducements
that adversely impact on teams' home grounds' viability.
Furthermore, the traffic planning seeking to funnel people to Olympic venues
isn't suited to the day-to-day traffic flows to work etc.
Like I say, the 2 weeks of the Olympics were amazing
but they weren't worth the long-term effects.
Athens & Tokyo would feel the same.
Maybe London's already subject to these influences by being a world financial hub
but, I suspect, as usual, the inevitable influx of money will only benefit the already-wealthy.
Cheers.
so you reckon swimming, cycling, rowing, triathlon are soft sports?
