Hello everyone,

I'm sure that you've all read the "I'm new to dubstep, and want to learn how to produce...blah, blah, blah" introductions a bazillion times. Well guess what, I am new to dubstep and I do want to learn to produce. BOOM! A bazillion and one times.
Do I think I'll make a career out of it, probably not, but do I find it interesting and complex and inspiring, hell yes I do.

I have been reading some of the threads and posts on dubstepforum.com and I don't think I have come across a single post that was negative or that ripped into someone else looking for help/advice. Everyone seems really willing to go out of their way to help each other out, and that is straight up awesome! So I am happy to become a part of this community and I hope that I can contribute and take away from it in the same vein.

Anyhow, in short: I'm a 30 year-old dude from the east bay area (CA), I've been fiddling with MAGIX Music Maker MX and while it is super primitive in what I would like to do, it is a good start for someone like me. I did take a Pro Tools class back in my freshman year of college, but I'll be damned if I can remember how to do much of anything. I don't really have any theory background, but have about 13 years exp. playing the drums (casually - both in and out of punk and metal bands) so I know how to come up with a beat or two.
I am also trying to find a cheap-o keyboard through Freecycle http://www.freecycle.org that I can jam on and am looking into taking some summer classes or try and teach myself how to play as I feel that it will greatly help me with the composition of tracks, etc. But if anyone else has any sage-like advice they can provide me with, I'll gladly take it!

Hello I joined this site to hopefully get to know the basics of making dubstep not extremely ignorant on the subject but don't know allot either I'm not looking to make skrillex type dubstep but more along the lines of tes la,rok ,distance, skream ect more of the old school feel have made a few tracks but would love to get better at perfecting the wobble and mixing and making the beat any help would be great thank you and this sure so far is amazing!

Whats up everyone! I'm nick from NC I'm married with a baby boy (who loves dubstep in the car, start em young right!) I'm a Christian and a firefighter with Pinecroft Sedgefield FD. I've been into dubstep about 3 months but was never into rap, hip-hop, electronica or whatever. I have a background in hardcore as a guitarist and also as a guitarist and vocalist in hxc and post rock, shoegaze, and folk/ worship. Did drums too. So with my background I'm a huge skrillex fan (hate me, whatevz). I operate a small home studio (www.facebook.com/nickhawksproductions) and yes I try dubstep on PROTOOLS 8 baby!!!!! Looking forward to a lot of knowledge I've seen here!

I'll start with a question




yes we can all make a strait sub from a sine wave, but what about thickening up some dynamic midrange bass with an "underpinned" sine wave, so that you get the boom that moves with your midrange stuff.

I've tried side chaining my sine-sub to my midrange bass via a gate or a compressor with not great results, too much clicking, etc. Maybe i should just try and run another oscillator off my synth, playing a dropped sine?

Couldn't you just copy the notes the midrange is playing into the sub in your sequencer? I really don't see how this is a problem...

I'm Olaf, 22 years and hooked on dark underground music since 2004~2005 or so.. Loving the real (old-school) sound of garage, dubstep and the future movements representing the true sound. I mostly listen to dark minimal dubstep and other bass weight and freetekno. Been having an account for quite some time, and finally decided to actually post stuff here.
