Oh no joshismad hasn't heard of me, and according to my soundcloud neither had no one else! As I said a straw man argument that has jack to do with the subject of MASTERING!
No one is singling out Excision, or his style of music but you. There isn't anything creative or material driven as an excuse for a poor brickwalled mastering job.

Also to the other person suggesting I'm saying his music is made for ipods, I'm not. I'm saying that that's where the vast majority of people are listening to ANY tunes they purchase or they tend to consume the majority of the music from on lofi sources, that's just the nature of the current generation.

Now to dickwave about my own goals, I charted in the top ten of dnb beatport alongside some of my favorite artists, got featured in knowledge mag back when it was in print and not just in web form, have had my tunes released on wax, cd and digitally, got to tour and play shows FOR $, and continue to get paid royalties quarterly. Curse my low set goals! Now what have you done?

If Deadly is setting his goals low, then a TUNE BATTLE must take place.

I don't see what the big deal is... It's a growing trend that a lot of people like. It's not a false sense of loudness perse; It's a type of mastering that really is designed to be all around powerful, as opposed to having each individual sound having power. I personally can't stand the way it sounds, but I can understand why it's used. It makes the song as a whole sound bigger. Albeit it also makes the mix sound rather plastic and lifeless, but there's still reason behind it. I highly doubt that Excision got bamboozled into doing this. There are loads of guys doing it because of the bassline "arms race" so many are in. It may make it so that a lot of things lose their punch, but it makes the overall sound bigger and more powerful.

This argument is just as ridiculous as the "skrillex sucks, no he doesn't" argument. It's a matter of personal taste and preference. I personally can't stand this type of limiting, but there's plenty of sound engineers that go for this type of thing in particular.

actually looking at the label as a whole it seems like it's a recent trend on some of rottun's recentish stuff which is a shame
must have changed ME, or they don't have a regular ME they use

It's not just a trend there man. Look up half of the beatport charts and it's all the same. Don't get me wrong. I'm not defending joshisrad here. Half of the stuff on the beatport charts is awful imo, but it really is a type of sound that a lot of people are actually trying to achieve, and I personally can see why. The benefits don't outweigh the downfalls in my eyes, but to many people they do. To each their own and all that plur shit.

honestly i don't really shop at beatport or go there enough to comment on anything but the current top 10 and looking at rottuns catalog on there
but this tune definitely stands out among the current top 10 which seem to be mastered normally
you can even tell the difference in perceived volume from the brickwalling if you compare it to the other tunes on the top 10 (and honestly the content of most of the tracks on the top 10 is so damn similar it's even easier to pick it out)

Just had a look through the top 50. Usually the top songs are littered with that style (they're not now). But if you keep going there's plenty of them. Really it doesn't matter. We don't like it but there's plenty of people who do so I'm sure it's here to stay.

I think the brickwall mastering can be good for EDM sometimes, as the master carries more overall energy. It's true that it loses punch and all that, but after all it's meant to be played out loud and danced to. I'm talking the disto heavy EDM now btw, brickwalling deep stuff wouldn't sound that good I think

people have limited their masters for a long time
its just gotten louder and is starting to sound really shit. Its getting much harder to produce a mix that's loud enough and is still faithful to one's own vision of their track
it's not a personal taste thing. just about every engineer, plus any artists/listeners who have a clue, are against it.
it's an objectively bad trend.

Especially considering, as we have all stated before, the volume can just be turned up rather than hammering the tune.
