how do you guys usually layer your midrange stuff with your sub?

Create a simple sine waveform, then copy the pattern from my mid range onto the sub. Remove notes that sound out of place and extend other notes to cover them. Listen & adjust.

Most of the time I write the sub to match the drums and then fit basses around depends what your going for

I've been doing this alot, but I have also made tracks where I "layer" my sub with my kick drum pattern, and from what I can tell it sounds pretty solid. However what's the "best" way to do it? I guess it depends really, but is there a "proper" way to do it?

layer your notes like wub said. most of the time people play along with their drum beat, as in layering your mid and sub on the kicks and snares. or, syncopate it, and have the mid and sub play in between your kicks and snares. or do both.
