White Noise in Reason 4

Post by One Zero Three » Thu Apr 26, 2012 2:10 am

Hey guys, first post here! I am really into music production, im only 16 and enjoy a ton of electronic music, my favorite artists being Excision, deadmau5 and Ajapai. Ive worked with reason 4 (yeah staying with 4) and know it very very well. One thing that i havnt been able to make sound good is white noise. Any tips on how to make a really nice white noise patch? Tips for EQ/anything.

Im looking for white noise like in everyones favorite song.... Levels by Avicii. I know i know. :u: that song.... Its the first song that came to my head with something like what im looking for. I want to add it into my songs to give em a little more depth and variation. Any tips/help would be appreciated! Thanks!
I love making music.

Try bright or pink noise in reason's "thor". The trick is that you want it to be prevelant enough to add to the music, but not so prevelant that it gets fatiguing to listen to. Experiment with envelopes on the amplitude of the white noise, particularly the attack, decay, and sustain. Also, make sure you use a separate synth for the white noise, because if you have a lot of distortion or other effects on the it, it will sound just god awful. What you want is a clear and clean sound, and the way to get that is to use bright noise, which is higher in the frequency range.

Consider eq'ing, filtering, using a delay, a chorus, reverb, delay one side of the signal, you can use muddy noise too, depending. Maybe work a really mushed out synth in there, maybe like an overmodulated maelstrom, mix it low in with the noise.

Also consider reversed ride and crash cymbals. Can slow them down and filter the lows out.

Just try to bring some character, to what is otherwise a totally played out sound.
