dubstep producer's manifesto

Post by monobajo » Tue Jul 03, 2007 8:06 pm

Hello to all whom may read this. my name is Victor and I live in Portland,OR
I produce and spin under victorknox and used to go by chango. A year ago from today I had all but given up the DJ thing and was a very dissillusioned producer. The generes I had always gravitated towards ceased to fill my cup. My background origianly started with producing hip hop in the "90s" with various hardware. Hip Hop and Reggae were definetly first loves for me. Early in the "90s" I guess I discovered under ground dance music culture. It was Jungle that really spun me on my head though. As a drummer it really blew my mind the percusion programing and as a bass head the smooth rolling 808s were soothing. In my time I have embraced many musical styles. Techno, Breaks, 2step, d&b, Hip Hop, Reggae, downtempo/trip hop and House to name a few of the electronic ilk. All of which are areas that I have gone as a DJ.
Not until I found dubstep have I been so satisfied with a genere of music. Dubstep seams to encompass all elements that apeal to me from other music generes. It brought me back to the decks and got me excited to sit in front of my Mac again all night producing.
I consider my self a voracious producer. In 6 months I have managed to produce 15 dubz. Not patting my self on the back no. But this is a milestone for me. Weather music is good or bad remaines objective to the listener. Such is art. What is dubstep?
We have all heard that often enough. Did we know from day one? I didn't. Wheather you feel my music or not is not going to stop me from producing another 15 dubz by years end. Its all Hip Hop to me anyways. I luv it. DUBZ & SUBZ. Making beats, spinning records. Yeah, thats what we do. Hearing other producers and being inspired yes. I can truely say that dubstep changed my life and I feel I owe a thanx to the pioneers who bought us this sound. A thanx to my homie Mortal who brought the music to my attention. Thank You
Music is not proprietary to me nor do I fear constructive critisismz. I only fear Izmz and Skizmz. All new dubz in the player right now. Hit me up for 320s if you like. Hate on my traks and send me sum blah. Its all good.

Word up! It's great to see North America, much more the North West on her reppin'! Big up. You should come check out some of the dubstep nights. Currently there's Subsitence by Struggle at Baltic once a month on Sundays and Shift Fridays by Dirty Steve at Tost. I do a Wednesday Happy Hour at Baltic, but that's more of an excuse for me to attempt downing a fifth of Grey Goose by myself every week. I'm getting close, I promise.
