Is all dubstep in a minor key?

Post by classicaldubstep » Sun Apr 29, 2012 12:24 pm

Just curious if dubstep always has to be in a minor key, because to be honest, I've never heard a "happy" sounding dubstep.
So I like Avicii, and I wanted to make something similar to his genre. Turned out really well...

You can also be in harmonic minor keys or even diminished keys to get the "sad" feel. You can even use a major key and use a phrygian mode. Most funky dubstep would use the mixoloydian scale and the major scale. I am pretty sure Flux Pavilion uses the major scale in his songs by the way.

Major being "happy" and Minor being "sad" is like Fishprice's "My First Music Lesson".

I have heard tunes in major which are daunting and tunes in Minor which are upbeat and make you smile.

Scales are just sequences of notes and theres so many options thats eventually you'll find sequences which destroy every 'rule' there is.

To answer your question though, yes, there is Dubstep in Major and Minor.

Came to say this, and honestly I'm far from an expert on anything musical. All I know is that with something as subjective as a song being "happy" or "sad", there are very few stone chiseled rules about what you can do to achieve either.

I also say it doesn't matter. Every scale has notes in all of the basic relative modes. Simplistically; Em = Gmaj, Am = Cmaj, etc. and all the other basic modes are found starting on any note other than the root of the minor (or other) scale and following the same notes of the original scale up an octave.
I think the game is to express what you are trying to express regardless of the key. And why not throw some key changes in there? =)

I can just imagine it. 2nd drop starts to fade to an outro then BOOM modulates up a major second and repeats, cheesy pop style :cornlol:

lmao, now I see why there are corn emoticons.
I was thinking more along the lines of bad-ass Animals as Leaders style, key change into 9/4 time signature. :h:

I wrote something in a major key back when I first started making dubstep; my mates said it sounded like something from Crash Bandicoot
