Setting up my rig so I can stand while producing

Post by DrastikMeazures » Mon Apr 30, 2012 11:13 pm

Anyone here do this? I'm thinking of raising my existing desks by about 18 inches or so.

My chair's on it's way out so I was thinking of getting some kind of extended height model so I'd still be able to sit if I want.

Ive kinda got my shit divided up all ergonomic like, if its a standing-sorta piece of kit, like my mixer, its at standing level... if its a sit in my chair sorta kit, its at the appropriate height (rack has effects units on top dynamic/amp units on bottom)...

It creates kind of like 'stations' or some shit if that makes any sense at all? You can dj over there < or sit over > there and record your vox/acoustic instruments... theres a drumset back \/ there and all my rackmount stuff is at arms reach right /\ here.

Monitors, ect. at appropriate for each place I might stand too...

when Is tarted producing, I worked with my laptop mounted above my mixer, because I was into DJing and that made sense when I was mixing, but god, it was counterintuitive looking back, and my workflows increased 100 fold since I got everything positioned where it should be.

Do whats best for you, consider what position your comfortable in for each item your using, and try to make it convenient to switch between these positions as you go... if you need to stand and play your midi, put it standing, and next to your chair, if you need to sit to use a mouse, put it seated.

I've actually known a few people to switch to the whole "standing workstation" method. Those that do it usually are quite happy they did.

As a cellist, I am just too used to sitting... 8)

Working in a music studio is not good for your body. Look at all the serious engineers/producers the look like homer Simpson. Got find what works right for you. I've gone through a lot of permutations and I truly hope I'm onto something with the latest. It is a kind of knee chair that should hopefully help me w my back. I've had some serious problems/surgery and am totally fucked now. I really hope this will help take stress off my back. But I've tried so many things, like u, a raised desk and monitors. Didn't really work the way I wanted, but you got to keep trying. I'm a firm believer in being active with your body if you are making dance music. Your body is a meter, when it starts to bounce you are getting somewhere.

Just waiting for the follow up thread "Setting up my rig so I can sit while producing"

I usually stand while composing drops though, helps keep the energy up if I can move around.

Wouldn't you get tired after like 30 minutes of standing though? But I do notice after a while my posture deteriorates while sitting

You posture should remain the same long as you're sitting upright correctly.

i stand when producing alot of the time and i find it does actually help with workflow and staying creative for longer...i honestly dont know why but it does.
Im not sure getting your desks raised will be a good idea though as you will get tired of standing up after a while which will put a strain on your wrists and arms if you then try producing while sitting lower than you should be

I've never really tried producing stood up, i like to have my speakers at ear level and don't have any stands. Used to just lay in bed when i was using a laptop and headphones though, was very comfortable haha.

Like some people have mentioned, the reasons I want to stand are becouse sitting for long periods of time isn't good for your back, and you can develop blood clots in your legs.

Plus I feel more energetic when standing, I'm the guy in the pub who never sits down, if I'm out to have a good time it's not gonna happen planted in a seat.

The reason I'd have to raise my desks is first of all their kinda low to begin with, secondly the only thing worse for my back than a crappy chair would be hunching over my midi controller at it's current height.

Thanks for the replies everyone, think I'll try it.

ah ok fair enough, what i would suggest is to bring you desk up to a height which is perfect for sitting down while producing and get some wall mounts for your monitors which can be adjusted so you can always have them at ear level standing up and sitting down. Midi controllers and other gear doesnt really need to be raised i find, at the end of the day you'l know what feels right.

I stand most of the time. Mix position is the annoying part. I fall apart in a chair. Be asleep in like 2 hours, standing? I can go all day. I just switch between the two.

It's so weird I came across this thread as I've been considering it for weeks and I finally took the plunge! Here is how it pretty much looks:

It feels great. You have to keep moving around on the spot though to keep your brain active and mind awake. But I prefer to sit down as a break rather than stand up as a break. Here is a good infographic which explains why sitting is bad for us:

Also, the best stand up desk I found was this one, but it's quite expensive, even for a manual lever. This is good as you can alternate between sitting and standing. But I thought, why waste money on this when I can build my own, and if I want to sit, I'll sit in the living room/kitchen/bed and read or whatever and then come back to producing standing:

Do a search on here for this topic with poster "futures untold" homie was really into this, think he saved up several dole checks and bought a major MAJOR sit down stand up desk. Should be useful reading, and why not give that thread a bump. THX.
