gonna use this thread to talk about sub bass for a minute
i feel like a majority of the producers on a bass music forum don't fully understand sub bass and it quirks me
don't have the link but in a bassnectar interview he described sub bass as being a physical presence and i totally agree
most people don't really have the privilege of feeling a sub how it should be.. but say at a bassnectar show which i've been to a million times, you can totally feel the presence of the bass in a way that i don't think a lot of people understand. a lot of people like to use "harmonic" subs or some shit like that.. that's not a harmonic sub that's some low (not sub low) bass sounds playing the same notes as a sub. straight sines pop subwoofers and create a presence felt like no other. every big time dubstep producer whose stems i've downloaded from remix competitions' subs were straight sine waves. :: pause because i have no fucking clue where i'm going with this anymore::
each note played in a sub frequency has such a different feeling to it. i don't think a lot of people ever think of that. they "listen" to what sounds good and don't really think about how it would feel. and that might not be the goal of some people - they might just be making it for themselves to listen to or whatever, but i'm pretty sure most of you reading this dream of playing your shit out on the biggest system possible.
i know a lot of you go to shows regularly, and if you do you might know what i'm talking about. if not, go to the next real dubstep show in your area. try to get to the center of the floor, and move closer and further away until you find that "sweet spot" where you feel the bass just running through you. notice how none of it is heard. each note has a different FEEL to it. :: pause again ::

Yeah, anything above 90 hz isn't sub bass. It's not felt, it's heard. Sub bass is anything from 20hz to 90hz. When people talk about putting light distortion on a sub to give it harmonic content, all they're doing is adding a bit of mid to their sub, which is fine, but don't call it sub. If that harmonic content is above 90, then it's not longer your sub, it's your mids and your highs.

Yeah i have a big sub as part of my system now. its off most of the time when mixing, but having a proper subwoofer makes it much easier to do a proper sub bass for a track

yes, i must agree that bass should be made with the intent that it will be felt -- this is fundamental. attention to how different bass rhythms affect mood is one of the most important things a dance musician can know. all other elements must either cooperate, or at least acknowledge the bass's presence, and so it is all in a way built around it.

yeah man. i have a 12 inch sub sitting at my feet and it's by no means a production sub but it has definitely allowed me to get a good understanding of sub bass and to feel it the way it should be felt

yeah. another thing i want to add to all this is i think it's the whole brostep/new dubstep thing. now i didn't really get into it til that shit got big and it's mostly what i enjoy listening to, but in most of it the sub is just there because it "has to be" in a sense. and i understand why guys who love the older stuff get pissed about brostep.

And Distance has the most floor shaking, chest rattling subs that I've ever heard, so I take that advice to heart!

most cars these days have pretty decent systems, newer ones come stock with at least one subwoofer. that's besides the point.
most subs are going to follow your hearable bassline, for the most part. which, if i'm not mistaken, usually goes down around the range where most people's "sub harmonics" go. so what's the point in adding harmonics to a sub that are going to follow the same melody as your midrange bass and sounds that you can hear?
and when you add harmonics to your sub, you're just hurting the pure sines power. you're going to have to lower the gain on the sub because the harmonics are going to make that shit louder, if you're using the same vst/channel/patch whatever
