nowaysj wrote:Press, if I'm understanding you, one of the things I've done in that situation is duplicate the synth all the automation/midi, everything, and then switch the osc to sine. One way of gluing things after the fact that works pretty well.

Also to reiterate, for no reason at all, that taking control of the sub's envelope, independent of your mid bass, gives you a whole new lever into the swing/dynamic of your sound. Anyway, whatevers.

yeah i get you and is a great tip! and perhaps i should be less lazy and do it the long way or more like your saying sometimes cuz lord knows i do not have the cleanest mixes all the time and this is a great way, but i think i got a bit long on what i was really trying to say which is that imo your over all mix is way more important to the power of your sub than what kind of wave form your using and it seems people want to reply to every bass thread with use a sine like it is the only way to make a good sub.

But yeah, I don't finish something if I don't think it's better than the last thing I finished. So I'm always getting better.

It's crazy because I made that beat in about 30 hours total elapsed time. I started it one day at noon, and finished it the next day at around 8PM. When I first started I could never had made something like that in that short time. I always knew I would be able to eventually, because I believe in myself, but I'm just observing the great increase in my skill since last year.
good job man, gotta give yourself those pep talks sometimes

i keep my FIRST attempt at a song right on the desktop and ill play it anytime i think what im making sounds like shit, and it makes me laugh bc THAT was awful lol and comparing them is like comparing apples to spaceships :4:

I still think some of you are missing the point. Anytime it's not a sine, those other elements you're talking about most likely aren't even coming out of a subwoofer anymore, depending on the setup. If you want those characteristics, clone the patch. Make one a sine, the other whatever, and high pass the non sine. But to straight up push the subwoofer to its max potential, sine sine sine. I think its just being lazy not to do so.

yeah my sub has lowpass knob on it directly i usually cut it around 80-90hz , so anything above that isnt just theoretically NOT sub bass, its not even hitting the sub physically

i haven't used a pure sine in a while. i like a little bit of flavor to it. this might mean i loop a cycle of an 808 drum, or it might mean limiting with quick release (IE 'soft' distortion), or adding some square/saw with my sine. i usually start with sine so it's there, but that doesn't mean there's no room for anything else. i mean sure.... technically if you add higher harmonic content, you are taking away from your total headroom, which leaves less power for the sub.... but anytime you add anything you are doing this. your hats and snares are taking away from the power of the sub if they are playing at the same time, and yet you still put in those because they add to the track. in the same way, your sub can be added to to enhance it.

I guess I just think using a pure sine would be boring/unoriginal. I'd like a little more character and/or movement to my low end

people use sines for low end because not much can be heard but rather physically felt
it has nothing to do with character or originality

also the thread title

it's been shitty for years now

Sonika wrote:Mikeyp, contradicting your point about straight sines a little bit, Distance explains really well why he likes more resonance than just a straight sine in his tutorial about sub bass.
And Distance has the most floor shaking, chest rattling subs that I've ever heard, so I take that advice to heart!

Either way, awesome tutorial:
