Audio interface and computer
Hey guys, I'm in the middle of creating a new Abelton set up in my studio. I'd really like some opinions...
I currently have a PT HD set up but I need a more creative daw to work on several of my clients project--no disrespect to PT user. I absolutely love Abelton and own it. Unfortunately the tower I'm using is too slow...so a new computer is my first purchase. Secondly I want a very good audio interface. After that I should be okay considering everything else I have in my studio. I'm waiting to buy the new 27" iMac coming out next month, and I'd also like to purchase the new Lynx Hilo interface.
Question 1- Will a full blown new Ivy bridge iMac with 32gb of ram be able to run plenty of plug ins and soft synths?
Question 2- What are your thoughts about the Lynx Hilo as an audio interface with this set up using Abelton? I see that the sound quality is incredible but I also see that it's USB...would that cause any latency issues? I don't need anymore ins/outs so it looks great. What are your thoughts? Any other suggestions? I feel this is a good start but it would be nice to have some input...thanks!

Re: Audio interface and computer
How old is Ableton?
Have people been using it on old systems that don`t have 32gb ram??
Your question is almost troll like.
yes the new iMac will run fine.
Use Logic to answer your questions.
The Interface is fine as USB.
If you have latency issues then you can just adjust the buffer size of either asio 4 all or your interfaces native Asio driver.

Your question is almost troll like.

You'll have to excuse my inexperience in the world of "native"... I've always used Pro Tools HD and never really had to focus on the computers processing power and such. The last time I used a "native" interface, I was using the digi 001...yuck! It had latency issue galore!!! So although my questions may have come off as troll like, I honestly am just looking for some help out there... Put it this way, my HD system is still running on a G4 833 single processor mac--it use to belong to Jesus---OLD!!
All in all, I honestly have NO idea how many plug ins can literally be run on a new imac...not exact numbers of course but at least an approximation. Is the set up I spoke of complete overkill? Should I look at a different interface that less but still kicks butt? Again, sorry for the dumb questions but I've been stuck on tdm so long that I'm a little lost in the computer age of pure speed and power. Thanks!

Re: Audio interface and computer
Fair enough brother.
Well said on the 2nd try
I wouldn`t say the new iMac is overkill but it certainly isn`t required in the slightest.
32gb for one is a huge amount of ram.
But if you have the money then imo go for it.
It`s going to serve you very well for quite some time.
The Lynx Hilo I don`t know so can`t comment on.
Numbers of vst that can run on the iMac can really vary from vst to vst.
But it can range from 10-100 and upwards.
A top end machine should really not limit you in terms of vst useage.
Your main limitation will be creativity.
If anything you`ll run out of ideas before running out of memory or maxing the vsts.
There`s a sticky on the production page that deals with soundcards/interfaces.
Your best bet is to read it first.
