Artists doing well without supplementary DJing?

Post by Chris mack » Sat May 05, 2012 10:39 pm

I can't DJ anymore for medical reasons, which I have come to terms with, but I can still make music. I am happy to just be making music and sharing it, but I was just wondering if there are any artists out there who do well in the scene without DJing to promote themselves. I make a mix of semi clubby shit and some headphone music also.

Make music good enough and other people will want to play it out. Burial and The Widdler come to mind.

I think that the ones who dont dj must have day jobs. It would be pretty hard to make a living by selling tracks only, unless they are really mainstream tracks

Depends what you mean by "doing well"? Popularity within the scene or money?

Popularity would probably be the same as if you was DJing.. unless you were a popular DJ your music will only gain major popularity if you get big DJs to play your music and get big labels to sign you.

Money.. yeah don't give up your day job. You have to be something special to make a living just producing.. that is obviously an assumption that you aim to make good music, it's very possible to make shit music and make a living off it.. almost everybody in the charts manages.

I have a problem with my inner ear that means I can't really be exposed to loud noise. It is a bit of a tnuc to be honest.

Thanks for the replies...
