How do you go about producing emotions?

You can use theory to break music/emotion down and try to form a basis for a tune, but really, I don't think you can teach this kind of shit in an organic way.

- it sounds to me like you're approaching music in a technical, utilitarian way. I also get drawn in to the technicals more than the songwriting at times, but really, once you've finished fannying about with plugins, you need to be able to lay down some raw funk/dark/comedy/headbanging shit, and that's not something you can put in to words IMO.

If you're really trying to say something genuine with your music, the notes will come naturally!
If you have a girlfriend, get her to dump you, then you'll write some emotional beats for sure. Or you could just sample some rain.

Yeah, I like being very technical with things so making the noises and shit was always really fun. Shit, I've been experimenting on and off for about 7 years now. I finally figured out a decent question to ask besides, "how I make sound? " I'm glad I've gotten the responses you guys gave, I was skeptical about asking on this forum because it's a dubstep forum. Dubstep in my opinion is kind of lacking a lot. I could explain the basics in about 5 steps(minus the technical stuff like sound design). But yes, I figured the biggest thing I need to do is experiment and learn on my own, I'm just happy to have the information the other fellas gave. Music theory is a really good place to start.

I don't know, like, I really don't know. About what you said or any of this. I've just been farfing and fanoodling for way to long making beats, and learning technical sound processing shit that my song writing is like totally atrophied/underdeveloped. I totally recognize that, am trying to square up and address that now.

But I think really masterful song writers, and I'm not talking about like dusty old masters, but including them, I suppose, but just anyone that can make more than one good song in their life, I think most of those people have REALLY studied songs by other great masters.

How they did that studying I suppose varies. Some played in cover bands, others I'm sure, more formally studied, others just tried again and again to imitate in their daw. But I'm more certain than ever that all the artists I admire have A LOT of time invested in listening to music and really working at how that music works. Exactly how you digest that music, I think varies by the person, but I'm really thinking that digestion is happening in a big way.

Name a few for me.
I'm sorry if I came off as an ass, I just got tired of dubstep once I found something significantly better, psybient. Like shulman, ott, and shpongle. I want to get to their levels of music making. Trying to figure out how they make the shit they do is mind boggling, which is why my next venture is to teach myself how to be categorized in that genre of music.
