THE INDEX The Index’s first release has seen Badawi’s ‘El Topo’ drawing from dub, bass heavy, and Middle Eastern influences while transforming them within the labyrinths of its own ingenious sound. In listening, one cannot help but conjure images of Jodorowsky’s brilliant barren lands and mystical cycles of transformation. On the flip is Shackleton’s haunting reinterpretation of the previously unreleased ‘Dstry All Prfts’, an already striking sonic presentation that’s further carried by Vengeance Tenfold’s oracular echoes. ‘Stem 1’, an audial offering from Badawi’s treasure-filled archives, serves to close the release as a lucky set of three.
How did you and Raz meet?
I’ve known Raz personally for about 3 years, but I’ve known his music a lot longer. I was really into it in college, back around ‘95. He was doing more dub, experimental, hip-hop stuff at the time; along with avant garde classical stuff. We met when he started coming to Dub War. He began incorporating dubstep into his own productions. Raz was someone who was a bit of an idol of mine, musically speaking, someone I was very inspired by. So it was nice that he came to Dub War and became inspired by that. He started sending me sketches of tunes. I was definitely into them, so I booked him. It was one of the first Dub Wars at Love with him (as Badawi), Shackleton, and Kode9 on the bill. As a result of that night, he remixed Shackleton’s tune (‘The Rope Tightens’ on Skull Disco) and Kode9 did a remix for him (see ‘Den of Drumz’ on ROIR Records).
